I have a precision 650 workstation with dual monitors. Last week the picture on the left display started shaking. When logged on, the picture would shake and also during bootup, the bootup screen was shaking as well. The right is fine. I rebooted the machine swapped cables to see if it would follow(it didn't) and reseated the video card which is an nVidia Quadro FX1000. I then swapped monitors and once the new one was turned on, the shaking had stopped. However, when I plugged in the monitor that was shaking into the other CPU, it was fine. I assumed that maybe it was just hot and that being off for about ten minutes gave it enough time to cool down. It is very hot in the main office space and has been so for quite some time. So I decided to wait and see if this happened again and today, the left monitor started shaking again. I reinstalled the driver to the video card with no luck. I then decided to swap out the video card. The replacement cards that we have are nVidia Quadro FX 1100's and when I reinstalled this I was still seeing the bootup screen shake. Once I loaded the drivers, rebooted, and logged on, the image had stopped shaking. However, the bootup screen was shaking so I knew the problem really wasn't resolved. Nevertheless, I proceeded to adjust my displays to the settings the users need. When I went to adjust the refresh rate from 60 to 85Hz the screen started shaking again. So I put it back to 60Hz and it is fine for the time being. What might be the problem. Why is only the left monitor having this problem and leaving it on 60Hz seem to resolve this.
Just so you have the other stats you mentioned, the CPU is 2.80GHz and we have 1GB memory.

    Thanks,

just to confirm, its always the left monitor that shakes, whichever monitor that is?

I got a bit confused reading that, my fault i'm sure, its past my bed time.

is the left monitor nearer a heat source, or something that might cause interference, such as speakers.

what other electronic devices are on and around your desk?

Sounds like the degauss circuit in the monitor has started to go. I'd take it to someone qualified to fix monitors, get them to take a look at it. Its not worth life and limb fiddling with it yourself!

Can't be that can it gold? it happened on both monitors  I'd say there is something near it that is disturbing, my phone makes mine shake or flicker even sometimes when it is close to my monitor if it rings. The disturbance is only when the phone rings and severity depends how close together they are.

I thought about the fact that maybe something is disturbing it, but there is nothing near it that I can see that would cause the monitor to shake. There is another computer right to the left and then a phone to the left of that. Otherwise, nothing. It's never occurred before and these computers have been in the same spots for a year and a half.

Also, just for clarification, there are two monitors, and I just wanted to clarify that the shaking occurs in only one of those monitors and it is always the one that sets on the left. I refer to them as left and right monitors. And yes, I replaced the monitor with another one and it still occurred. That is why I'm not sure what the problem is.

But thanks for the input so far.

I can't help your problem but i have a similar problem of my own.
ever since i bought my computer i have had a 2.1 speaker system.
and everytime i turn it up loud my screen shakes to the beat of the song.
i have boughten new speakers and it still does it.

this isn't really a major problem but it would be nice to know why it does that.

i have a 17inch LG studioworks 700s moniter it came with the computer.

if anyone could quickly answer my problem without ignoring TEM's problem
    it would be very apreciated.

    thank you.

The only thing I can think of for both of you is that alot of electrical things can and do emit some types of "frequencies" that can affect other electrical things. I have come across many a strange occurence in the elecrical things world we live in. It may not even be something in your house if you live near other people who have electrical things. If you live in the woods then I would suspect something in your own home though. I'm not in any way an electrical things expert, so I cannot say exactly what may be causing it, but I'd explore maybe other options for the placement of your electrical things and if that don't change anything, maybe it is a bigger problem.

i would say it must be interference, it could even be the neighboring computer, or some connected device, i don't know if its possible in your office, but if you can, try and seperate them, (even temporary) and see if your still getting the problem.

Also do you plug everything into the wall directly? or through adapters or extension leads? if you have a lot of plugs drawing from one source, it could cause problems, never had it with a monitor but this was once the problem i had with a network hub that kept loosing connections, so power flow can cause problems.

Just wanted to say thanks to all. I will look into the possibility of electrical interference as well as power. Not everything is connected to the same outlet and the monitors and CPU are actually on an UPS. But the UPS units we ordered can't handle the load. So I have both monitors on the surge protect side while the CPU is on the UPS backup side. So maybe I'll look into putting one monitor back onto the UPs backup side next time it occurs. For the time being it has stopped shaking. I'll talk to the user as well, make sure he wasn't carrying something that would cause interference.

    Thanks again,
    TEM
