I think what you're looking for is the "Insert - Hyperlink" feature. Then click on ...File and navigate to the required picture. Look for "Text to display" and replace what's there with your preferred text. Then click Okay.

If the link needs to point to somewhere on the internet, use ...Web Page (but think about copyright issues). Navigate to the picture and having selected it, LEAVE THE WEB PAGE OPEN AND SWITCH BACK TO EXCEL. I don't know what version of Excel you're using but I end up with the wrong file if I don't leave open the web page. Again, choose your preferred text and click Okay. Now you can close your web page.

It might not be necessary to leave open the web page but I'm working out your instructions from a computer which is currently unable to access the internet (possibly busted network dongle :( ) but is running a web server locally for development purposes so I don't know what's causing the incorrect file to be selected for the link. Try closing the web page and see what happens but if it goes wrong, you know to leave it open.

When I click the link in Excel, the picture is opened in the default program for viewing that file type (in my case, the gif or jpg opens in Microsoft Photo Editor, despite having tried to stop it from being the default... :( ).

If on the other hand, what you're trying to do is show a picture in Excel, use "Insert - Picture" or if you want to be able to edit it in Excel "Insert - Object" should be used.

I find it that an html website would do for what I wanted done here. I am running a report of discontinued items from SQL server. Then we use Crystal reports 10 to display images but e-mailing these images to customers/reps and workers can fill a 500GB server fairly quickly especially wiith all the forwards and reply. An automated html page works great for me.

Reason I asked for excel is that it allows you to sort, but with pictures as images it is useless. Sorting would work, I think, if you had links, rather then images.

    Thanks for the help.
