Hello everyone, hope someone can tell me what's wrong with my ping..

I have a Hughesnet dsl connection, I upgraded the system to 1.5ghz download speed. I thought that would get a good ping while gamming. When ever I log into a game like F.E.A.R., or CS:S my ping is reading 1500 :cry or worse... The lowest I have seen it was 871.

I have a Nvidia graphics card (Geforce 7950 GT OC 256 MB GDDR3) :D , also the networking card is nvidia. It came with this Gateway system. I ran a driver program (driver Magic) to make sure all the drivers were up to date.

Can anyone help me with this, Or do I just have a crappy system? confused

Are you behind a router, firewall?

Yeah, I have a Linksys wireless router for the other comps in the house, but I'm hardwired direct to the router. Running zone alarm firewall, have it set to allow the programs mentioned.

ping isn't based on your computers speed. Different factors are included like how far the server your using is, how much traffic is arriving at that server, your connection speed to the net, and so on.

Try do to a search in Google for any ports that might need to be forwarded in your router. Also when you connect to servers, try to pick servers located near you, and at least try to keep them in the US. Like Colemanguy said, there are a lot of things that factor into your ping. Try opening a few ports, and disabling zone alarm when running the game to see if you connect any faster.

    OverCooked,
can I dedicate a port just for gaming? IF so, can it be set to turn on & off with the game?
    Just asking....

Yes, but it's complicated. Having a port permanently open isn't as dangerous as it sounds though.

Joshcrick, is there a walkthrough somewhere I can veiw? I went to a website last night, on how to forward ports, I followed the walk through, and had no luck with it. I dissconnected the router from the dsl modem, and I still had very high ping/latency. Could it be a setting on the nic or is it the isp? The isp is hughesnet dsl I'm at 1.5mbs download.

No, each game will have its one different set of ports it wants open, theres no "one" dedicated port you can open for gaming. Your ping problem is likely a problem between your isp and various servers your trying. Try to find different servers, also for games usually the only time you need to open a port, is when your the one running the software.

    Re: bad ping

Im not a gamer by no means but have you tried pinging other servers. Hotmail. yahoo. google, heck anything else than your gaming server. If it's the same reply on average then its your connection probably. How about a tracert in a cmd prompt to the game server. Are there dozens and dozens of routers in between you and your game server?

Just to note (but correct me if I'm wrong), I'm under the assumption that the farther away you are from the source of your DSL the slower your connection will be. I don't know if thats part of the issuse or not, but you could find out by doing what dedub said. Run a tracert from a command prompt on some websites such as google.com and yahoo.com to see if you are getting a slow response from everywhere. I personally would do this with my firewall turned off, but thats up for debate if that would help or not.

In order to even find out if the router is the problem, you should try plugging your computer directly into your cable modem. (bypassing the router) If there is a difference in your latency, then it's your router. If this is the case, try upgrading the router's firmware. I think there are certain Linksys routers that had a problem with the firmware.
