Ok ths is my problem, when I go to Advanced Configuration in IDE Primary Channel (sry if thats not exactle the name, i have my XP in Spanish), I have only a hard disk there so I choose DMA if possible and it puts in Ultra DMA 2 mode, but when I go to IDE Secondary Channel, (I have a CDR and a CDWR) i have both in DMA if possible but only the CDWR its in DMA mode, the cd reader its in pio mode, so when i play music from there or copy some files my system gets creepy, idk why it doesnt changes. Please Help!
PS: Sry for my english im argentinian, just try to figure out what im trying to say :)

You need to be sure your running the latest motherboard drivers. Again, you guys need to tell us your system specs or we can only give generic answers.

Sry i coulnd edit the post to answer ur question
No, i never updated the motherboard drivers, so im thinking if that can help with my prob, or my mother its too old that i never would be able to solve the problem.
Its safe to update the motherboards drivers?

WinXP disables DMA automaticly if more than 6 data-transfers has failed. If this happens then the only way is to remove the disk-controller in the Device-manager and let Windows reinstall it again (Should only be done if standard IDE-Controller and not some 3rd Party IDE-Controller or else Windows might not redetect the disk system). Usually it is a good idea to make sure that the IDE-Cables are good (No bended etc.) to avoid future transfer failures.

Repair Slow Data Transfer Issues, XP.
XP upon receiving 6 six errors of access either HDD or DVD/CD read-write errors will reduce the data transfer mode until the system locks in PIO mode. After some hours online I came up with several items to "try" and resolve issues, as follows, Oh my system/ AMD 3000+, 1Gb ram, HDD 120 & 20 GB matched 7200 RPM, Burner 716A Plextor, ATI all in one etc, etc, XP Pro. What I tried, under device mananger> IDEATA/ATAPI, I removed the secondary IDE. Upon reboot XP picked up the malfunction and reinstalled the secdonary IDE but failed to redetect correct DMA mode of both New Plextor DVD dl drive and zip drive. Also from device mananger tryed> IDE ATA/ATAPI>Double click, Secondary IDE Channel>Advanced Settings>then for both Device 0 & 1 changed "if possable Transfer moed to "DMA if available", reboot & recheck, neither worked for me so went to Run> rededit> HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\(4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) at this point it depends on ones chipset after single click on above Reg Key opened four other keys for my VIA chipset, Intel uses other items to get to Pri & secondary IDE DMA Controlers, (aka chipset drivers) For my Asus A7V8X-X board w/VIA kt400 chipset. Picking up were I left off., my sub keys were 0000 & 0001 & 0002 & properties. The last one I'am still trying to figure out? However while your already here to invalidate the error counter which locks XP in PIO mode were You Can't enable DMA transfer mode is as follows, click one of your subkeys and make sure its the secondary IDE (Device 0 & Device 1) one at a time of course and deleate the following under each key, "MasterIDDataChecksum" then this one "SlaveDataChecksum" and if its there "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess" >reboot go back to Device Mananger ATA/ATAPI and see if you are still locked in PIO mode. You should be able to select "use DMA if avalible. For me I'am still trying to get the DMA mode up to Ultra DMA Mode 4-UDMA66-ATA/66 which is all the same thing 66.6MB/Sec for this Plextor 716A DVD DL Burner
