Pixel 7 Google Map App Confusion

When I open my Google Maps app on my Pixel 7 Pro phone it shows a map and my current location (CL). While my wife is driving, the CL remains in the center of the screen and the map moves. If she keeps driving and I then swipe the map until the CL no longer appears, the map stops moving and the CL remains off-screen.

If I swipe the map until I see the CL again, the map and the CL still do not move.

If I then quit the app and then restart it, everything works as it should. The map moves while the CL remains in the center of the screen.

Is that how the Map app is supposed to work?
