Does anyone know if enamel spray paint will take on plastic?

I don't see why not. Enamel paints are what is used on plastic airfix kits.

Sorry to intrude on your thread, just a question for Lev, did you make that avatar? you know your mainly responsible for my lack of attention, I can't really get into a thread topic lately, especially when you`ve posted, I get FIXATED on your avatar thats swinging like she just had 50 energy drinks.

Sorry, I just had to say it, it's been killing me to hold it all in, I go into a thread hoping you haven't posted yet, so I can type a reply without stoping and starting 10x before it's finished! :D :D :D

I haven't had much luck with painting some plastics, but model enamal works on plastic kits OK. Some plastics are better than others. The problem plastics I've fought (and lost) were the same ones used for shelves and shelf paper. What kind of plastic are you painting?

And yes, I love Lev's avitar too. It's a fun one to watch.

HAHA...no I didn't make it. I had this one when I first came to MGs, and decided to go back to it, only it is much faster than it used to be...dunno why that is

If you put AC/DC on she's usually pretty much dancing in time ;)

Howabout, if I see you online I will count to ten before I post, just to give you a head start :p

@lionrampant...sorry, but I still say the enamel WILL work :)

10, a mere 10? I`m a slow typer! Give me atleast 60, that way I`m sure to be atleast 1 line of text ahead of you, although.. doing the maths, I write ALOT more drivel than anyone else, so you may need to multiply that 60 by 4, or if you really wanna help a tool out, 5, just to be safe! :D :D :D

    /try's the AC/DC trick!

    Edit: HAHA, your right! :)

The plastic is the rubbery tube type used for small shelves and holders.

Usually the softer and slicker a plastic is, the tougher it is to get paint to stick to it.

Scuffing the surface with a very fine sandpaper can help, as that give the paint something to grab, but I'd take a piece into a good paint store and ask what they advise trying.

If in doubt, use Hammerite :p

Painting plastic usually requires a primer. Google "paint adhesion plastic".

If scuffing the plastic sounds like too much work you can go over the plastic with a solvent to partially dissolve the shiny outer surface, acetone may work on some plastics but butanone works on everything also known as domino wash very handy for making vulcanising glue stick rubber together pretty expensive though £20 a litre over here, just dont try and clean a cd with it,not that I'd be silly enough  :)

I'd definately try it small scale to see if it works. I tried the Krylon plastic paint, it didn't work well for my application at all.

Good to know. Honestly, I have never used it, the few times I have had any time of painting to do, I just popped over to dad's house and used the spray system, and honestly, never done much other than wood or metal.

Just remembered seeing it and thought it may help.

The plastic I'm trying to paint is the slippery rubbery kind. Something like a Rubbermaid product. It must be the worst kind to paint. The Krylon link looks helpful, though.

I wipe the plastic with paint thinners. If the surface gets a bit sticky, then ordinary enamel paint will stick without a prime coat. However, for best results get a can of primer paint that's designed to stick to plastic, then any kind of enamel paint can be used.
