I am not sure if to post this in the software section or hardware seeing as i also have a question about hardware.

I am running puppy linux tahr 6.0.2

This eee pc model is from late 2007 i believe so i can understand limitations that may come with it. The proccesor in a celeron M with 900 megahertz and i have 1 gb of ram

I can browse pages fine and do other tasks but i cannot seem to play videos good at all even 480p. Any video on youtube is basically unwatchable , and playback there is a lot of stuttering. However i have seen videos of people playing 480 p playback and even youtube fine but i can't even do that.

Besides puppy linux what other linux distro could i use ? I tried peppermint and manjaro but it wouldnt let me proceed because of my processor limitations.

Any help much appreciated in regard to being able to stream videos online and from a file.

Also i have a mini pci-e expasion on the laptop i have seen some ''video'' cards that i could possibly insert and upgrade ?

I have a 701 since mid-January 2008. I am running LXLE Desktop from a USB stick. I hesitate to install another distro because the inbuilt one plays movies I have on an sdhc card with no problem. I use this when I travel.

Later today i will fire it up and see how YouTube acts. If it is okay, I will post links to the distro. Eventually LXLE will be 64 bit but I'm running and have archived the last 32 bit OS.

Is your 701 overclocked? I noticed online that it mentions its actually under clocked by default to 600ish mhz and not running at 900 mhz

No! I don't overclock any computer I own.
I knew when i bought it it would not be fast but it has served me well for the purposes I bought it for.

I haven't fired it up yet. I go to quite a few forums and forgot exactly where I promised to test YouTube. I'll do it now.

I went to YouTube and watched a 3 minute clip from Frozen and several clips from Pitch perfect2.
Frozen buffered once or twice but it was not unwatchable.
Crazy Youngsters from Pitch perfect 2 I expanded to fill the 7" screen. I may have gotten pixelated at 3 or 4 places but the video was watchable and the audio was strong.

I also had to account for the fact that running an OS from a USB stick will be slower than if it is installed on the ssd.

All in all I would say it is very watchable and this during peak viewing time on the US East Coast.

thank you lxle was exactly what i needed you tube videos mostly play fine as does videos from an sd card.

Like you noted the partial lag might be due to sd card which i also tested in a sd card class 4 so i am sure ( i hope) the partial lag will more than likely go away when i install in actual hard drive.

Ill see if it makes a difference testing in a class 10 sd card. I wonder why puppy linux tahr was slow for videos though if anything i would imagine it should work better than lxle

    I have a question plodr-

You mentioned installing from a ssd would be faster but what ssd would i be able to use for my 701 ? If you have one can you note the model number of the ssd you are using?

My eee pc is just s 701 model it does not that sd or 4g just 701. The onboard 4 gb of ram it has seems very limited and since its soldered on i cannot change it.

However i seem to have a pci-e slot that i could possibly use for a small pci-e ssd but due to the era this laptop was released i am not quite sure which ones would be compatible.

I suppose if this is not possible my last resort would be installing ldxe on a 32 or 64 class 10 card. i only tested the live os system on a class 4 card because i don't have any class 10 cards so if it lagged just a tiny bit on the class 4 for videos i would imagine a class 10 would do a better stable job.

I was thinking of buying this 64 gb to install a complete ldxe OS ( not live)

However last is only my last resort in case i cannot find a compatible ssd for my 701 that is also not expensive as i would not want to spend more than $30 for one and i did not really need a ssd bigger than 32 gb

    The 4GB in the eeepc.

You don't have 4GB of RAM. That unit wouldn't hold that much. The most it will accept is either 1GB or 2GB. (I think it varies by model). There are some 701's that have an 8GB ssd.

Since Puppy is tiny, I'm sure the installed ssd would hold it.

The distro I'm using is on an 8GB USB stick so I think I'd have a tough time putting it on the internal ssd.

I do know i only have a 4 gb soldered ''hard drive'' what i was asking is what pci-e ssd i could add to the eee pc 701 because there is a slot for it right above the memory. Sorry i mistakenly typed ''ram'' instead of noting hd

I just don't know which pci-e ( mini?) this eee pc would support

After trying lxde i rather install that in my eee pc rather than puppy linux , however that wouldn't work out well with the internal 4 gb of space which is why i was asking what ssd pci-e i could buy that would work for this eee pc.

If that wasn't possible ( which seems like it won't be the case) i was just going to install lxde in a class 10 sd card that would be 32-64 gb .

Sorry, I don't know about ssd drives. There used to be a real good eeepcuser forum but that site went dark. I'm not even sure it is archived. That would have been the place to ask because some people, I think, added to their netbooks.

I'll see if I can find any information.

From what I can find, if you add an ssd, it will be a slave drive and not a boot drive.

This probably will not help but are very detailed and might give you another idea.

Probably do not want to desolder and risk breaking what is working

hmmm, this article and video makes it appear very easy to replace the original 4GB ssd in the 701 with something bigger in size.

I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try that either!

    i am confused though

Would this ssd not work for my eee pc?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/KingSpec-MI...0-900A-1000-/160856544730?hash=item2573cc15da

As for the slave drive part, can i just go to bios disable the 4 gb internal hd from booting then it would boot from an OS i would install on a ssd similar to what i linked above?

All that soldering modding and such is something i would not be up to doing, not only would be time consuming it would also pose a risk of me rendering my laptop useless. It just isn't worth spending that much time on an eee pc i mean i like old hardware but at the same time i have limits on how much time i would be willing to spend and money as well.
    >
The video posted is not relevant to this specific eee pc i am discussing? Because that ones shows installation of a 2.5'' drive something that would be impossible on my netbook i can only fit a ssd like the one from the link i posted above. And actually i am not even sure the ssd from above would work on my eee pc i could very very be labeled '' for 701'' but it might refer to ''701 sd'' and not 701 so i have no idea it would work on mine

I'm not the person to ask what ssd works or not.
You sure you want to purchase from there?

Why does it say 16GB at the top but 8GB at the bottom in item specifics?

Well the good thing is this ssd actually works on a 701 eee pc
I did not actually buy it from the person i linked it to i actually got it elsewhere.

When the ssd is inserted in the mini pci-e slot the bios automatically disables the onboard 4 gb HD and uses the mini pci-e as a primary boot.

The bad news is the drive i got was actually faulty... it couldn't complete any operating system installs it would sometimes it would get farther but i always kept getting faulty drive errors so i couldn't complete the install.

I always kind of despise waiting a week or more for an item to arrive and when it finally comes it doesn't work...

    Too bad.

I'm going to stick to running LXLE Desktop from my USB stick.
