Hi there and thank you in advance.

I have movie files on a usb that is formated in FAT32. When I try to play the movie file on the computer and It won't play. Tried vlc and windows media player and nothing. I am running windows 7. I also copied and pasted a file to my desktop and nothing.

What is the extension on the movie file?

I put avi and mp4 movies on an sdhc card and play them in Windows, linux and on my Android tablet with no problem.
I have some tv shos, also avi files on USB sticks which my husband plays with no problem.

I suspect it is the type of file you are trying to play that is the problem.

I'm helping my brother with this issue. I asked him to check what type of extension are the files in. I'll post back as soon as I here back from him. Thanks :)

Have they worked before on this PC? You may need a codec pack, what does it do exactly? Media Player launches and errors? only plays audio?

If the files are not playing from a USB stick or the PC, then the format isn't supported. And if VLC media player doesn't play them, you'll probably need a codec pack - like foogoo suggested.

Download MediaInfo, export the info and post it.

An IFO file is a DVD Information file.
    Wikipedia.

IFO files don't contain any video. Look for VOB files.

Look in the folder where the video files are. The VOB file contains the video. I play them with Media Player Classic - Black Edition.

To download MediaInfo Lite, just click on the first Download@MajorGeeks - just below DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS.

If he wants to play the file from a USB stick on any PC, he'll need a portable media player like VLC media player.
Here's the link to all the downloads.

Select either 7zip package or Zip package. Extract the files to the USB stick where the video files are located.

As for editing the files, forget about Movie Maker - it only supports Windows formats. I doubt he'll find a professional portable video editor.

Try the very similar portable Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. Both MPC-HC and MPC-BE are based on MPC.

As for playing it from a DVD player through a USB port, forget it.
He'll have to connect the DVD player to a graphics card.
