:( Can anyone help me with my cpu problem ??????
I have recently started to use my desktop again after not using it for a while, i added another 1gb of memory after the 512mb stick failed.

Anyhow what i am finding is that the cpu is more or less constantly running at 100% and so the computer is really slow.

Here is the details of what i am using

    xp
amd athlon mmx 3d now 1.1 ghz

on task manager i am reading

    cpu usage 100%
    Page file 489mb

    Totals

    Handles 12300
    Threads 583
    processes 45

    commit charge

    total 517200var
    limit 2126848
    pear 612216

    Physical memory

    Total 1539568
    available 90600 var
    sys cache 701500 var

    Kernel memory

    Total 42072
    paged 33408 var
    not paged 8656

i am struggling to understand why the processor is running at 100 % so i welcome any help and guidance

    Thank you in anticipation

    Bob

    Hi

What Service Pack is your XP at?

What process is using 100% CPU up? (e.g. explore.exe) can use either Task Manager for this or Process Explorer as a process thats using 100% can lead us to a fix?

The idle process is normal to be 90+% so this is not an issue if that is the process thats listing as the highest %

If you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) does the CPU still hit 100%?

    Have you checked for malware?

    Re: Please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi David,

In response to your questions, over my initial questions -

Firstly i am running xp with service pack 3

Even in safe mode i am still running at 100%

I have downloaded a malware programme from majorgeeks.com and everything seems to be okay.

I found that avg seems to be cpu hungry, so i uninstalled it and found that this resolved the problem at first, but then i noticed that when launching the internet browser (ie8) the cpu shot up to 100 % apart from task manager using about 3 to 6 % and svchost .exe using a little cpu all other applications were not using anything.
After a little while the cpu drops down to a low level of usage, and as you say the system idle process uses the majority, but as soon as you go onto another webpage the cpu goes straight back up to 100% and most of it on iexplorer.exe

I am still at a loss as to why this is happening !!!!!! and obviously i need to use an anti virus programme , i dont use this desktop pc much, but i want to use it as a back up and to convert my vinyl collection into mp3 files using audacity.

    Thanks again David

    Hi Bob

Cheers for the info, ok now while AVG may in part be the issue and I agree with you running without an AV app is not for the long run, so maybe an alternative would be good (Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast both are free and I use both, MSE is a lite running app on resources) but I would say only when we have narrow down the issue.

So its more or only when using the browser as in IE8 that the CPU spikes? if so we have a few options here....

    1. Its likely that an addon, say a toolbar etc could be causing this so we need to test IE in its no-addons mode and to do this its located in Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and you shoudl see Internet Explorer no-addons, run that and does IE spike in CPU still?

If not then we may have found the culprit in an add-on so what you need to now do is to find out which one and following this guide HERE should help in that, basically disable all non-Microsoft addons and then start IE and see if its ok, if it is emable one addon at a time until you find the culprit (do mention what it is as an update maybe available).

    2. Try a new browser as in Opera or Firefox, these are only workaround as the issue will still be in IE if you do not troubleshoot it, but at least you may get internet access without any slowness until you find the issues cause, or you actually may like one of the alternates (I run both and think they and IE are ok as browsers go)

    Re: Please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi again,

I have uninstalled ie8, and disabled all add-ons, i have installed firefox 3 and now i will see how things go.
I did notice that after 20 seconds or so the cpu level begins to drop down and the system idle figure starts to climb, but as soon as i click onto another webpage the iexplorer.exe climbs straight back up to the 80s and then it takes a while to settle down again, but during this time you cannot do anything else with any speed that you would normally expect.

Would it make any difference that i have ubuntu(linux) installed in another partition ????
Also i probably should mention that my recent installation after a format, tells me that this is not a genuine copy of windows, so i cannot install security essentials.

I think thats all i can tell you for now, except that i did not enable any of the add-ons !!!

    Thanks again

    Bob
