Hi all, I'm new to this and require help or advice in getting a computer to boot. The computer starts to boot and gets to the applying security settings, then a box comes up saying that lsass.exe has caused a fault and will shutdown. I have tried the drive (60Gb Maxtor) in another computer as a slave to check for viruses but AVG says it's all clear. I cannot get it into safe mode as all I get is a black blank screen. I sometimes get a BSOD with a message basically saying try a new video adapter. Tried to no avail. Please can someone give me some help. The computer is a generic (shop built in March this year) with 256mb ram running Windows 2000 an AMD2600+ proc.

My sister had exactly the same problem with her pre built system from (dont laugh TESCO) it is a fault with the instalation of windows, LSASS is the windows security descriptor, you need to take this back to the shop and ask for a replacement. I tried to clear the fault on hers but ther was no windows instalation CD so i could not reinstall windows (which is exactly what you need to do) sorry :(

Thanks AMDxp. I do have installation discs but it will not run a repair and says that there is no version of windows to repair. The shop it was bought from has closed down, so no recompense there. This computer is a works machine and has a lot of accounting data on it, but while his boss is away on holiday my mate used it on the net and couldn't get it to boot after. His boss is back on 03/08/05 so I am trying to help keep his job as he works for a small firm, but they cannot to lose all that data. (we cannot find any backups. Blinkin' Fool).

    Thanks

Thank you for getting back to me. D3m3nt3d & AMDxp
Sorry I took so long in replying. Yes it gives a timer but the symantic worm remover says it is not infected. I was wondering whether their might be a problem with the memory? The reason I have got the computer at home is I am at home recovering from a major heart attack so my mate thinks I have more time to try and resolve the situation. I do appreciate all and any help given and am willing to try most anything to help him out as I do know his boss (not a pleasant person, the type to make his life hell prior to sacking him). If you have any other suggestions I am willing to have a go. The drive at present is attached to my machine as a spare also running W2000. Forgive me if I am slow to reply, this is due to health. Cheers Jimbo

Back again. Ran "Stinger" on the drive with the result of 106451 clean files. if you can suggest anything else I will be happy to try. I have to log off for a few hours as the time here is About 8 o' clock (Evening) and I have to go to the hospital for some treatment. This usually takes approx 3 hours but I will be back later. All your help is definately appreciated.

Hi D3m3nt3d, It's now 11:30pm here, not sure what time you are at. I tried the Malicious software tool and all clear but I am not sure that it checked that drive as it is set as "G", as I 4 hard drives 2 DVD burners and a cd burner installed on mine. This leaves one IDE spare on to which I plug on what i need. So I've downloaded the tool and transfered it to the offending drive. Now got spend some time setting up other machine to test it. May not make it back tonight as the medication kicks in and really knocks me out. (Reminds me of getting high in the 60's. Sorry).

Sorry to take so long but had to spend a day in a hospital bed getting poked & prodded. But I digress, back to the main issue. What I have tried so far has not worked, so, (in desparation) I bought a new Hard drive, installed it and checked it was recognised by the CMOS. Inserted the W2000 installation CD and thought that would be fine, (FOOL THAT I AM). Files all loaded from CD, Started setting up windows and got a BSOD. Changed graphic card, changed memory, tested power output and am getting 12v & 5v at the plugs. STILL getting BSOD. I am at my wits end, puzzled, bamboozled and am contemplating suicide. Any suggestions (about the computer, not the suicide). :-(

Nice to hear from you D3m3nt3d. I'm not sure about that, I think it's all part of the same problem as I can't get 2000 to install on to a brand new drive. The BSOD message 1st time said IRQ NOT EQUAL TO--- the 2nd time it was something along the lines of a PAGE FAULT. This is coming up before Windows gets installed. Sorry I am a bit obscure but by the time I've changed over the machines I've forgotten the message. I will write it down the next time. One said remove new hardware, but there has been no new hardware added, apart from the new HDD. I am keeping the old Hdd to recover the data using my machine. Hope this makes sense. :(

Do you have an ATI/nVidia video card? If so, uninstall the video drivers. Reboot and reinstall the drivers.

Hi there Shadow_Puter_Dude. The vga card is a Mercury FX400. I can't uninstall the drivers as I can't the computer to Boot into normal or safe mode. I cannot even get windows to install onto a brand new HDD without getting BSOD. Thanks your help is welcome. Must go for a little while as I have to see the old QUACK (Doctor). My personal CPU is causing problems and I don't want him to have to open my case. (Surgery gives me the shivers).

Looking at everything you have done so far, it is a hardware problem. You are down to the CPU, Motherboard, CD drive, or the CD itself may be going bad. Try cleaning the CD.

Yes, RAM can be the cause also.
