I just changed over my motherboard, RAM, CPU, and GFX card.

I have a 5600+ on NFORCE4M-A motherboard, 4GB RAM, and nVidia 7950GT. I can't get this computer to post. I verified the PSU has the proper voltages before plugging in (the MOBO came with a sheet saying to make sure the outputs were at least X for each voltage).

I have only the motherboard, hard drives, power to the motherboard, power to the CPU fan, and power to GFX card plugged in. I start it up and I get nothing on the LCD. I am not sure if I am supposed to be hearing the CPU or not, but I can't.

Supposedly this setup was tested before it was sent out.

Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Remove graphics card, and check the leads , by releasing and refitting on the motherboard - make sure the plastic four point motherboard return to psu is connected properly .

Basically, with a new motherboard, you do it in stages, when this happens to you.
Standard start up -motherboard ,cpu/fan, one sick of memory, and connect power switch, and reset eads to motherboard.
System should start, and you should hear beeps from motherboard.
Then shut down, unplug mains lead, insert graphics card, restart -Should see bios screen, might have to oress del/f2 to get into bios.Next cd/dvd rom (one preferably, at this time )
Then shut down ,Then connect usb leads etc:restart
Shut down , connect hard drive, and restart, install operating system.

When the operating system is installed, put the rest of your ram in, and connect printers etc: all , one at a time .

    You haven't mentioned your OS.
Windows XP 32 bit version will only address 3GB of RAM.

I presume you read the psu rating plate as it won't operate without being plugged in to the motherboard.

What exactly does the monitor light show when you start the pc. Does it change colour / flicker or anything?

Forget it, the idiots included the wrong video card. I wasn't even aware that the 7950 came in AGP. And me being stupid and inexperienced with PCIE I didn't even think to look, just figured that was the way it "fit" into the slot. Finally I got the notion to look at the box after I removed the motherboard from the case and put the card in (it was hard to tell how it was fitting all cramped, but easy to see once out).

So I went out and bought a vid card locally since my crap is all torn apart. I ended up picking up an 8600GTS. Should I keep the 8600 over the 7950? It has half the RAM but higher core and mem clock speeds, and supports DX10.

You managed to put an AGP card into a PCIX slot?!?!?!?! And you hooked up the PCIX power to it also?!?!?!? The video card and/or the motherboard didn't explode into a ball of firey flaming balls of flaming fireballs?!?!?! WOW!!!! You're lucky!!!
Anyway- both video cards (the 7950 and 8600) are pretty mean butt kicking cards. If it was the 8800 I'd say keep it, but the 8600 might be about equal or even a hair below the 7950, but there's a good chance that I'm wrong. I'm sure that someone else with more NVidia knowledge will come along and clear things up for you.... GOOD LUCK!!!!

If you are using Vista, or, plan to, then DX10 will get you a better Aero experience.

I was going to go with the Vista x64 but had too many problems (mainly video card related), so I went to XP x64.

Actually, no. Aero is run by DirectX 9.0 L, not DX10.

Aero runs on DirectX 10. yes.....
    Sorry Adrenalyne,
As I understood things, DirectX 10 is/was developped for Vista, and it is supposed to enable more 3d etc:
I have read in so many places that was the case, and that directX 10 will not work in XP, but the hackers are doing their bit to enable it to work in XP.
Are you telling me that I have been misled?:crybaby

so if a game supports DX10, then it wont run on XP?

    No.

    DirectX 9.0L.

There are several reasons why DX10 won't make it to XP. However, neither will 9.0L.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

Direct3D 9Ex (previously known as 9.0L): allows full access to the new capabilities of WDDM (if WDDM drivers are installed, of course) while maintaining compatibility for existing Direct3D applications by putting it in a separate API. The Windows Aero user interface relies on D3D 9Ex. When 9Ex was still codenamed 9.0L, there were rumors that this would be Direct3D 10 for Windows XP.[4] It was quickly pointed out that this was not the case, mainly due to lack of support for WDDM in Windows XP.[

    DX9 cards support D3D 9Ex. DX10 cards won't be using D3D10 to power aero.

Depends on if it only supports DX10.

Thanks for the extra links/info, Adrenalyne.
I read in many places about the diectX 10, but it usually referred to gaming side, like this one
    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/11/30/directx10_future_of_pc_gaming/1

I understand the issues described in your links, and had read a little about those, but am not fully conversant with all the technicalities, like yourself.
I just believed that at some time the version 10 of direct X(if it is not called 9d/e/f, or something at the last minute, was being prepared for Aero use in gaming.

I'm not too keen on the technical details myself. I know D3D9 was added for compatibility with DX9 and earlier games, and I know D3D9Ex(9.0L) is used by aero. There is also D3D10, which is the DX10 API used for games. I don't know much past that. Near as I can tell though, Aero will never be accelerated by D3D10.

Aero is just windows manager. It shouldn't have any bearing on games.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Avalon, that was stripped from Vista?

Thanks for sorting it out Adrenalyne, I checked back, and, as you said, Avalon (Wpf) was to power the new Windows Aero effects.

Our apologies,Matth3w, for side tracking from your post, just a little:eek:-
What I was trying to say, was that if the card supports DirectX 10,I would have thought that it would be good for Aero, but as Adrenalyne pointed out the Avalon part , and I was behind the times, a little.:(,
But I would think your card will run well in XP, as Adrenalyne says -as long as it's does not just support Direct X 10 .:duck
