Please Help - Connecting Laptop To Broadband

I just bought a Gateway MX7118. I tried to connect it to the internet via my current broadband connection by simply plugging the network cable from my old computer to the laptop. The computer will sense the network, but it cannot seem to communicate. I have a static IP and the network settings are set accordingly. As far as I can tell I have the network settings are set the same as my desktop.

Any ideas?

What type of internet conncetion you have?

Does it need any authentication?

I have a cable modem connection through Comcast.

 

If you do not have a router, you will have to log into the authentication page for Comcast. Also, you should not need a Static IP on the laptop, due to it should pick up a Dynamic address from the DHCP server for Comcast. Also, if you haven't done so yet, turn everything off and back on, and it should work properly.

I would suggest getting a router to protect yourself from vulnerbilities of the Internet if you have not done so yet.

 

I am pretty computer saavy - I am just new to networking. So please bear with me . . .

I cannot log onto Comcast's authentification page, the laptop will not connect to the internet. What is DHCP? Should I change an IP setting somwhere then?

Like I stated before, shut everything down, start up modem, then computer, then you should be able to sign into Comcast's authentication page. Also like I earlier stated, get a router, due to both computers would be able to connect at the same time, and authentication is done through the router.
