Please help, how can I change my resolution so i can connect to tv?

I have a dell studio 1537 that uses windows vista home. I would like to connect to a jvc tv model number hd-56fn97. however, the jvc support told me I have to change the resolution to 640 by 480. and the lowest my computer settings can go are 800 by 600 when I go to display settings. and thats for the monitor. Can someone help me connect my computer to my tv in a way that it works? I am using a vga cord, and a possibility that I know nothing about is switching to an hdmi cord or something else.

That looks like a 56 inch HD tv and they are telling you you should be setting your resolution to 640x480?? That makes no sense.

hmmm...after doing a quick search I found that it accepts a max resolution 1024x768 as of Cnet:

You might want to give that a try.

I'm on Windows 7 and never used Vista, but if you go to your control panel and display, do you have the option to 'detect' a monitor?

Was the resolution I listed the correct one or did you solve it some other way?

your resolution was right. i ended up before i saw your reply just tinkering with the different resolution settings, bc i saw in the tv manual it needs to be 1024x786 to hook up to the pc. so thats what i put it on, and the screen popped up on the tv. Thanks very much.
