    Hi everyone.

    I have had this problem for a few days now it has happened before and i easily fixed it using information i found on the internet but i forgot how i did it since it was years ago and now i cant seem to find any useful information on how to get my sound to work.

    My problem is that i have no sound whatsoever for anything i have tried everything known to man to get it to work, I have installed all the latest drivers multiple times searched through all the settings for sounds and audio devices and its not a hardware problem definately. I think it has got something to do with windows because when i use services.msc there is no windows audio option?

    So please can anyone help or have any ideas that are out of the box because i have tried literally everything :(

    It would be helpful to know a little more about your system. What operating system are you using? I know it's a version of windows, but which?

    Also, does your system use on-board audio, or an add-in PCI audio-card?

    The brand and model of your computer would be helpful - or better yet the brand and model of motherboard your system has.

    My problem is that i have no sound whatsoever for anything i have tried everything known to man to get it to work, I have installed all the latest drivers multiple times, there is no sound control button in the taskbar (bottom right of screen and there use to be), when i get into the settings for it everything is greyed out. I've searched through all the settings for sounds and audio devices and its definately not a hardware problem. I think it has got something to do with windows or some software because when i use services.msc there is no windows audio option?

    Also for a couple days after it first happened sound still worked in winamp after i changed a few settings but nothing else had sound. It first happened from what i can remember just after i had downloaded some windows updates and also gotten rid of a few viruses as well as some unneeded processes. I have a Realtek High Definition Audio sound card installed.

    It's useful to say more than "I need help" in a posting. How about giving technical details that might help diagnose your problem?

    If I (and possibly others, such as Spad) are going to help, at the VERY least you need to give:
    - operating system (Unix? CP/M? Win Vista, Win XP? Win 98? Win 3.11? what?)
    - machine make and model (or, if it's a self-build, the motherboard make/model would probably help).

    Without at least that information it's not really possible to even start to try to give an answer that's not a total shot in the dark.

    The OS is Windows XP Pro SP2 version 2002
    Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio
    The computer make is XRX But i think its just a custom build

    Im not sure what the motherboard is at the moment but when i know i will post

    With the information you have given, I think it is a driver issue. You can try:

    Download, but don't install, the most recent driver package that worked with your sound card.

    Go into add/remove programs and remove the Realtek software you installed before.

    Go into Device Manager under sound, video, and game controllers and remove the high definition audio device (if there). Then double click "Legacy audio drivers" and go to the properties tab. Remove any device listed here.

    Restart windows. Then, install the driver package as suggested by Realtek.

    I hope it works for you - this usually clears up most problems I have had with sound on a number of boards.

    I posted a message a few mins ago with a link to your audio drivers on the intel site, but I guess embedded links have to be approved by the moderators . . . but I recommend you use the audio drivers off the intel site (bit late now, I know).

    If I think of something else I'll let you know. Hope this helps . . .

    The new drivers havnt fixed the problem there is still no sound at all, i downloaded the drivers from the realtek website but i will also try the one u mentioned from intel and see if that works, but if not do you have any more ideas?

    I think its a problem with windows for the sole reason that in services.msc there is no windows audio option to run would there be any reason why that service is not ther? I think it is due to some recent updates i have gotten for windows?

    thats what i think and i cant find any way to fix it but if there are any ideas i will be very grateful

    Have you checked your port to make sure it is not faulty?

    Try one or all of these steps:-
    • Make sure audio jack is plugged into the right port on most modern pc's it should be the black one(should be).
    • If you have audio out ports in the front of you pc try them.
    • If all else fails try plugging some headphones in to your audio outs back (and if you have some on your pc) front aswell.

    Please post back to let us know if it fixes the problem.

    Sorry that didn't help. About the only other thing I can suggest right now is to go into your BIOS and make sure the audio is enabled there . . .

    And to clarify - you are using on-board audio, right? I know you said you were using a card, but that board comes with the Realtek ALC861 as an on-board option (if I looked at the Intel info correctly).

    I'll post if I can come up with something else -I'm at work and a bit stretched for time right now. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable folks here that can help you also.

    You have probably already done this, but check the plug and wires on your speakers - I've seen that be the problem before. Also, if you are using System Restore, have you tried a restore point from before this problem occurred?

    Yes the cords are plugged in correctly and i know this for sure because i have managed to get my winamp to work again by changing the settings back because they were automatically changed? but everything else seems to think that there are no sound drivers if there is any explanation why only winamp will have audio and not even windows will that might help to diagnose the problem/cause?

    I feel like an idiot - but I just remembered you said the "Windows Audio" service had disappeared from your services list. Apparantly the virus activity you mentioned may have corrupted the registry . . . If you are comfortable with editing your registry, then you can do the following to restore the service to the list (i.e. the registry).

    First - back up your current registry - either by using the "export" command in the registry editor, or by using ERUNT - a nifty little program that can be found here on this site - just search for it by name. Also, turn on System restore (if it's off) and create a restore point.

    Second - make sure your registry is backed up . . . I can't stress this enough.

    Third - cut and paste the following text to a notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSrv]
    "DependOnService"=hex(7):50,00,6c,00,75,00,67,00,50,00,6c,00,61,00,79,00,00,00,\
    52,00,70,00,63,00,53,00,73,00,00,00,00,00
    "Description"="Manages audio devices for Windows-based programs. If this service is stopped, audio devices and effects will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."
    "DisplayName"="Windows Audio"
    "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
    "Group"="AudioGroup"
    "ImagePath"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,\
    74,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,\
    00,76,00,63,00,68,00,6f,00,73,00,74,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,00,2d,00,\
    6b,00,20,00,6e,00,65,00,74,00,73,00,76,00,63,00,73,00,00,00
    "ObjectName"="LocalSystem"
    "Start"=dword:00000002
    "Type"=dword:00000020

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSrv\Parameters]
    "ServiceDll"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,\
    00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,\
    61,00,75,00,64,00,69,00,6f,00,73,00,72,00,76,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,\
    00
    "ServiceDllUnloadOnStop"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSrv\Enum]
    "0"="Root\\LEGACY_AUDIOSRV\\0000"
    "Count"=dword:00000001
    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001

    Save this file to your desktop as "RegSav.reg" without the quotation marks. Then, right click the file and select "merge". Reboot the computer - this will restore the Audio service to the list. I tested this on one of my PC's running XP Pro SP3, and it caused no problems I could detect - but only use this if you have your current registry saved.

    Let me know if it fixed your problem.

    Hi :)

    No problem. Well, I've only used it on XP. I know the service configuration didn't change between XP SP2 and SP3. I can't speak for Win7 (or Vista for that matter) but I got a feeling it's a totally different ball game with how the registry works in both operating systems.

    I guess if you have access to another PC running Win7 you could export that portion of the registry to a notepad file and see if they look the same.
