please help... i need a modem for my laptop

I need a modem for my laptop. I have an old laptop that is a IBM ThinkPad 760ed. It has a phone jack installed in it, however the computer is not detecting a modem. Can anyone recommend a cheap modem for an older laptop? This is my backup computer, so I don’t want anything fancy. Thanks!

 

Was the modem detected before? Did you get the modem driver and go into control panel and add a device?

 

I am not sure, as I never used this computer for networking. A friends gave it to me a few years ago, and I strcitly used it as a word processor. there is a phone jack on the laptop and I also bought a pmcia card with a phone jack installed on it.

Windows ME... It says something about BIOS. THat I need to update them. How do i do that? Thanks so much!

 

Search for the laptop at IBM and they'll have all updates needed. But who, or what is telling you to update the bios? Maybe you need to enable the device in BIOS.. hit F1 at boot to go in most of the IBMs.

 

I can’t find an update for the 760ed laptop, that is run by windows me. I have looked on ibm.com, but have had no luck. Also, do you think there is a site where I can download the bios onto to a disk or cd and transfer it onto the laptop? Thanks again, i really appreciate you helping me out.

 

It looks like IBM sold its thinkpad unit to Lenovo. But I don't see that model on their site.

It says you need MWave MDSP2780 driver for sound card and modem.

This looks like the proper driver to me even though WinME isn't listed it should be compatible.

It looks like the built in modem tops at 33kbps. Is the PMCIA card a 56K modem? It might be worth looking for drivers for that modem.
