hi my name is emily, and i...am an idiot. yes i am a COMPLETE IDIOT and i deserve this...my problem is that I have forgotten the password to access my computer. I am currrently using Windows XP, and I am the only user on it, and before I went on vacation I put a password on it so that nobody can access my computer (my brother really). i figured i'd remember it, well my vacation left me brain dead so when i came home i had completly forgotten it!! what i am asking is, how do i fix this? because there's no way that i'm ever going to remember this password. it must be something real off the wall because i've tried words from a to z. i have not a clue what to do, how to get around needing my password or anything. i don't have the guest user turned on so it's all me. please help me, i am absolutly desperate!!

Hello Emily, adn wlecome to Major Geeks.

What brand of computer do you have?

You may be able to boot into safe mode and change your password from the Administrator account if you didn't set a password on it.

i have a Dell. i am the computer administrator, so that's the one that's password protected. i am the only user useing the computer, and guest is turned off. i am currently on my moms computer to get help.

No, you have a User Account in the Administrator Group. The Administrator Account is a hiden account on XP Home, which I assume you have, since it's a Dell; and is only accessible from safe mode. Once you are in safe mode the password will either be "admin" or it will be blank. Those are the two most common.

Reboot, at the initial screen, before the Windows XP screen displays, start tapping F8 repeatedly. A menu will come up, select safe mode from the menu. A startup screen similar to the one you see in normal mode will be displayed, except this time the Administrator Account will be displayed. Log into the Administrator Account, go to the Control Panel select User Accounts and change your password.

OMG I honestly can't thank you enough. It worked PERFECT, and I really really really appreciate it. This is the happiest I've been since I first forgot my bloody password! I feel as if I owe you something. You really are a very kind person for helping me out.
