I'm new to the board...first, I can relate to all the problems some of you've had..I'm having the same thing. I've added ad-aware, pop-up stopper, norton virus, yet stuff still gets through. But my problem is this: because ad-aware deleted one of my files (and I don't know which one because I'm not computer smart) my internet explorer wasn't working properly. So, I put in my restore disk and used the portion that said my files won't be deleted, but the disk should restore my computer back the way it was. Most everything is still on my computer except my emails. I'm sick at heart because I had pictures and other things on my email. I had outlook express 6 but now I have 5. Isn't there somewhere in my computer that still has my emails? I know the FBI can read people's hard drive to get information off...are my files lost forever?

Thanks for your reply. As far as ad aware goes, it worked good the first time I installed it, but I think it deleted some major files, hence, my computer is messed up. My isp doesn't have old files, the emails I lost were all on my computer in my outlook. I'm sad, but learned I have to back up my stuff. I tried installing Norton on my computer this afternoon because when I still the restore it took Norton off. Now, Norton won't install; keeps saying something in it caused errors. I'm getting so discouraged getting on the internet anymore. It's my lifeline sometimes, but it's getting way to complicated for me to keep up with all these programs you have keep running.

    Hey Canter :)

Didn't adaware back up your files before you fixed the problems?
i thought it did this from its own.

first thing to do i guess would be to run windows update and get back to OE6 before trying to restore the files adaware backed up - if it did any :s

Well, first of all, ad-aware only backs up what it removes. By the sounds that restore disk (which I presume came from your OEM) will have replaced everything except for "Documents and Settings" folder. This will hopefully leave your emails in tact.

Don't launch OE yet, or set it up for the time being.

You need to look in a location that looks like this :
    C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{880FF1A3-9084-4E2C-9710-0B5C89D631A6}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The big long string in {}'s will be different, but hopefully there will only be one there, if not there will be two, and one will have your emails in and the other won't.

Select everything thats in there and copy them to another folder.
    Update OE to OE6.

Run Outlook Express, then go File - Import -> Messages. You will be importing from version 5. Click "import from a OE5 or OE6 Store Directory", navigate to the directory you copied the emails to and you've got it.

    Goldfish,
Where do I even begin searching for that? I'm not smart around a computer. I went to my C drive, but there's no folder that says documentsandsettings.

    Goldfish,
I found the outlook files you said, however, they won't open. It gives me that windows of list of things to open them with, but none of those programs will open them without it being all garbled. Do you have any other suggestions what program I can use or how to use it? Thank you so much.

    Hey Canter,

just copy those files as a backup in another folder, then upgrade you OE from 5 to 6.
afterwards you need to import those files you just found to restore your e-mails.
To restore you e-mails, this can be done in two ways.
the first and simple way is to open OE and use the import feature.. the other one is a little geuss ;) and is to copy the backed up files into the folder that was created with the upgrade of OE.. ummm ...can you still follow? :)
