I've just formatted my XP Professional hard drive using the boot from CD-ROM method.......or so I thought. Everything, spyware and all, FINALLY appeared to be wiped from my hard drive and I thought I had a clean slate. That is, until I accessed the internet and went to install Norton antivirus trialware to protect the computer from future invasions.

Suddenly I heard the noise of several things being successfully downloaded (da-dum!) and the toolbars, Start Menu and taskbar all turned black, just as they had before I blanked the computer and pop-ups claiming I had Spyware started coming back.

When I restarted again to finish the installation of Norton, I got a message that a file (not sure of the name) in C:/Windows/System32 is not responding and popups again. Now things are freezing up again as normal and the internet is running about 5x slower. I half expect to get a "Windows is automatically shutting down" message again from Windows/System32/slass.exe that occured before I blanked it.

Why is everything automatically invading my computer again even though I supposedly blanked it?

Also, I keep getting this message at start-up even before blanking that "Media Tickets has been successfully removed" and I have no idea what this means. But whatever it is, it's just one of the many things that's ****ing my computer up.

Is it a lost cause? Please help, majorgeeks! I'm desperate!!!

You should not connect to the internet until your firewall, antivirus and spyware programs are in place. You have 2 choices. Run the tutorial or start again, this time being sure you have everything downloaded first, Forget Nortons, get Avast or AVG, get Zone Alarm free for a firewall and have Ad-Aware and or Spybot. It would be nice to have Service Pack 2 downloaded or ordered on CD in advance as well.

It seems since its a clean install, I would feel better doing it again, rather then re-cleaning. We dont often suggest a format, but in your case... I think its best.

did you do a repair of windows or a format and reinstall?

if you do a repair install of windows all your old software will stay.
also when was the last time you did a full scan with adaware and spybot and Norton? if it's been awhile I would do it now.

    good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I really appreciate it. I'll give it a try and let you know if it works. ;)

Do any of you know WHY spyware is so viscious? It's not like you will buy any product if it intentionally ****s up your computer!

(What the hell is atiphexx.exe by the way? It's yet another thing that popped up with an error message just as I was writing this!!! :( ARRRGGHH!! )
