Hello; I a new and this is my first post; so please bear with me guys.

The problem is as follows.....included is my ip config/all results.

I am using windows media encoder to do a live broadcast, using the 'pull from encoder' option. This means i can give out my ip and port number (url) and all you have to do is paste it into media player to listen to me live.

For some reason no one can log on to my stream and the following error occurs......

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.

All i have presently is a zhone 6211-I3 connected by rj45 to my desktop. I also have a linksys WRT54G2 to link wirelessly to my laptop but its NOT hooked up yet; as i am trying to avoid conflicts and get this thing working!!

My connection is the 512Kbps DSL package.

I am a newbie to networking; but here is what i know.

1 - Media encoder is listed as an exception in windows firewall

2 - According to the zhone settings the firewall in the router/modem is disabled.

3 - File sharing is working (limewire) and i can otherwise browse the net just fine.

4 - Im told it could be a port forwarding issue, BUT i dont know what to check and how to fix this.

5 - I need to link my WAN ip to my LAN ip for the broadcast to work??

OK GUYS; i need help sad.gif

Help me to broadcast my music; i got the great offer of doing gigs on an internet radio station; and i really want to link up. cool.gif

ALL and DETAILED advice is most welcome. unsure.gif

The weird thing is this actually worked a couple of times......But i havent a clue what went wrong.
I even did a fresh install of XP Pro but that did not help.

My local ISP has disabled the firewall on my connection, (i take it thats the same firewall on the zhone modem?)

it probably is the port forwarding issue. your friend is putting the ip : port into wmp and your router doesnt know where to send the info. you have to go into your router and there should be an option for port forwarding. just fill in the source and dest port and ip and im thinking you should be good. or at least a step closer to where you need to be...

Right, it may have worked before your IP changed, maybe?
Static your IP and then in the router forward requests for whatever port to your static IP. Or if the router has a DMZ try putting your IP in there and see anyone can connect to it.

    Hi guys;

    THANKS for the replies.

I dont grasp this port forwarding thing; i had a go but im confused.....and i read about the DMZ thing also but i dont know what entries i need to put in there.
    Is it safe to DMZ?

When i go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and do an open port on say 8080 it says

Error: I could not see your service on 190.59.xxx.xx on port (8080)
    Reason: Connection refused

I guess im a great DJ but a LAME IT guy:-D

Anyone willing to guide me thru this?:-o

Modem/Router is the (Zhone) aka Paradyne 6211-I3

I have now setup the Zhone AND the Linksys WRT54G2 so i can at least surf on my wireless laptop, with the desktop simultaenously connected......

    STRESS

what port forwarding does is when someone tries to connect to your public ip: port, your router sees that and sends whatever requests to the internal ip specified in the port forwarding options, specifically the internal ip on your computer. so if i put in 200.1.1.1:5840(random ip and port) your router will send the request for the app data that uses port 5840 on to your internal ip of 192.168.1.2.

you need to do that if youre behind a router because the switch doesnt know where to send the info requested from 200.1.1.1 if someone from the internet makes the request.

    if that makes sense.....

when you access your router, do you see an option that resembles port forwarding at all? maybe external access or something?? also, it might be a good idea to do what foogoo said as well just to avoid any kind of ip changes that will affect your port forwarding rules.

    Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply my friend.

You mention Router and then you mention switch!! :confused

I know for sure my Paradyne (aka Zhone) 6211-I3 is a modem router.

I know for sure the linksys wrt54g2 is a wireless router.

What i dont know is why are ports coming up as blocked on http://www.canyouseeme.org/ , what is blocking these ports.

Windows media encoder asks to find a free port when you are setting up a broadcast. for example 8080 comes up as blocked; and thats the default port.

I think thats where i need to start.......please correct me if i am wrong!!

There does not appear to be port forwarding on the zhone BUT theres PORT MAPPING.

Theres also port triggering Virtual servers and DMZ host.....

    THANKS and keep it coming:):)

eeh try port mapping. so youre saying the port that wmp listens on for whatever youre trying to do is 8080, right? try going into your port mapping options and put in for the source ip, might have an option for 'all networks' or something. source port as 8080 destination ip as the ip address of the computer youre doing it on destination port as 8080. so that will send all info sent to your public ip on port 8080 to your computer on 8080. just an idea...

just turn your firewall off when youre trying this as well. itll just knock out 1 possible area that could cause problems.

In the modem you need to forward the port you're using to the router, assuming that your server (the computer hosting/providing the service) is plugged into the router now.

For forwarding in the modem you can follow this guide: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Paradyne/6211-I3/Echolink.htm

Although it says to enter the IP of the server, if you have an intermediary device in between, you will need to forward to that. Basically, this means, if the router is in between the modem and the server, you need to forward to the router, and then in the router forward to the server. Also, this guide is for a different service, so just replace the port numbers in the guide with the ones you need. (eg 8080 - 8080)

After forwarding is in the modem, you can forward in the router to the server. Here is a guide: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G2/1st_SMTP_Server.htm

Again, I didn't see the service that you're using in the list, but it will be the same, just different port numbers. So, just know to use the IP of your server instead of the one in the example, and use the port numbers that you need instead of the ones in the example, and you should be good to go as far as forwarding is concerned.

If you need me to clarify anything, just let me know.

Edit: if you don't know what the external IP of the router is, just open up the router page, then click on the Status tab on the far right. Under the Internet section, the IP address listed there is the external IP.

I'm not sure what all canyouseeme.org does but it may be saying that the service can't be found simply because it isn't forwarded. It may not necessarily be a matter of it being blocked, but the modem and router simply don't know what to do with the requests, so an error is produced. If you forward everything and still have trouble, then we can take a look at the firewalls. Setting up a DMZ is ok for testing, but I'd suggest you don't leave it like that, and only open the ports that are needed.

    Hi Guys;

    NO LUCK:-o

I have now removed the linksys totally; all i am left with is the modem and desktop

in the modem i have setup up a virtual server to work on port 8080

i choose 8080 in the encoder and it works according to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ (this site checks your ports to determine which are open)

Success: I can see your service on 190.59.xxx.xxx on port (8080)
Your ISP is not blocking port 8080

when i STOP the encoder i get this message

Error: I could not see your service on 190.59.xxx.xxx on port (8080)
    Reason: Connection timed out

yet still my friend cannot log on to my broadcast.......when he enters my url and port as supplied; into windows media player:cry
