    i have a
    amd athlon 2200+
    ati radeon 9800 pro
    philips 5.1 soundcard
    1.5 gigs of ram
    60 gigs of harddrive space
    winxp home with SP2

    my problem:
When i boot up my opening windows music cracks and skips , when i play music in winamp it does the same, folders and programs open slow , and wolfenstien et lags more than normal when playing online. doom 3 which used to work will not anymore due to the sound skipping :( If i move my mouse cursor in a circle on the desktop with not even one program open it will lag about once a circle.

    what ive tried:
ran updated Ad-aware , Spybot S&D, AVG, Antivir, defraged, scandisked, reloaded video and sound drivers. ran memtest overnight with no errors and formatted and reloaded windows. allthough i have to mention the reason i formatted was because programs were opening reeeeeallly slow but i dont recall the music cracking and doom 3 worked great along with other games . programs would open slow the first time then after that it was great. but now after formatting ive come up with this new problem.

please help me, my computer is my life i need to get it fixed!!
ive tried other forums with no luck :(

errrrm you got the latest drivers for your sound card? run CCleaner, Empty Temp. and Cleaner! (All can be found in MG downloads) and try running the disc cleanup utility and defragging to increase the speed of your computer.
the sound crackling is either your speakers dying or sound card not installed, but i think it's most likely your speakers. what speakers do you have? are they normal desktop or are you running 5.1 surround speakers?

yeah ive reloaded updated sound drivers several times, they are 5.1 surround speakers ,but i dont think its the speakers because speakers dying wouldnt make programs open slow or my mouse lag right? im starting to think its my ram , i ran memtest again and got 3 errors overnight. thanks for the reply and ill run those programs you recommended.

I'm not convinced it's a hardware problem, though that certainly isn't impossible. It sounds to me like something is soaking up CPU clock cycles that shouldn't be doing that. You might want to pay a visit to the "Spyware Specific" forum on this site and look at what's involved in running Hijack This to find out what's going on.

It's surprisingly easy to overlook the simple fixes. Thanks for letting us know what worked.
