I am very very very frustrated! I keep getting error code mmsystem002, I noticed this problem has been encountered many times before and there are several sites that offer help. Unfortunatly, I have tried all solutions from www.geocities.com to no avail. I also notice on all q&a sites there is only advice that doesn't seem to work and no responces as to what actually does. I don't know what type of sound card I have, (where do I find out?) I am on Windows 98 and using winamp. I tried uninstalling and re downloading winamp and real player, I made sure my sound card was firmly in place and I went to winamp options etc..... please please help me!!! 3 days with no sound is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, you can try the following solutions. One of these should work.

    1) Install an updated sound card driver.

You can download the below for information about your sound card.
    AIDA32 - Personal System Information

Check the sound card manufacturer's Web site for updated drivers and install the latest driver for your sound card.

    2) Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX.

    Download DirectX 9.0c

    3) Make sure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer.

    Download Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1

Go into Device Manager, remove your sound card and reboot. Allow windows to reinstall the drivers.

Go into your 'Control Panel' and double click on 'Sound and Audio Devices'. then when opened click on the Audio/Default Device page and see what it says there, what sort of sound hardware you have.. :D

A little more info on your system specs would help ... is this a computer you bought from a store .. like an Emachine or Sony? if you could post the Model number we can tell you what sound device you have

or you could open AIDA32(which bjarrick provided the link to the dl) ... goto Computer>Summary>Multimedia ... it will say "Audio Adapter" underneath and in the right hand column it will name your sound device ...hold your mouse over the name of your sound device it will give you two links - one for the product description and another for your driver ... simply click the "Driver Download" link and it will open your browser to the appropriate driver download

I notice nobody who has had this problem ever comes back to say what works. so here I am to tell you; I am new to computers so the info this site gave me was very helpful. The problem ended up being my sound card died. I had to phisically go and purchase one. This is an old computer and i had opti 82c931. I went and bought a new sound blaster card and all is well! thank you for all your help, I will come back here for computer help always! :)

For anyone else who hasn't given up on their card just yet... I'll tell you what worked...I have a 1.0 Athlon, running a SBPCI128 sound card (old, yes I know), 384 megs mem., 3 optical drives, and a whole bunch of other stuff, anyway... I got the EXACT same error message and after trying several suggestions the one that worked was found at this address:
    http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=35636
basically go to RUN...type in SYSEDIT...click on the tab with the heading C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI...scroll down till you find [BOOT]...under this type in DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL...goto FILE...SAVE...then reboot. My speaker icon magically appeared again and Winamp belted out my favorite tunes once again. All is well. This is what worked for me, but try the other suggestions that are through the control panel and such first though. Good luck.
