Please help! my computer doesnt register drives...

hey guys, im not too fimiliar with drivers and all that stuff, but recently i took out my cd rw drive from my sony vaio to put it in my old windows 98 hp pavilion. the hp pavilion is about 3 or 4 years old, model number 4455. i thought id put the cd rw in my hp, but when i did, the hp didnt register that the cd rw was in the computer... so now the hp pavilion that doesnt work correctly. i tried to put in a windows installation cd but wouldnt even load that in dos mode. so i cant get any cd to play and i even put the old cd drive from my hp in there and that doesnt even work.

i seriously have no idea what to do so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the jumpers on the drives, and make sure they're correct for the machine you're putting them into. Drives on the end of the cable must be either "Master" or "Cable Select", and drives on the connector in the middle of the cable must be either "Slave" or "Cable Select". Note that the two drives on the cable must be either both "Cable Select", or must be Master/Slave. You can't mix the two different standards.

There is probably a small chart on the drive label showing you the various jumper positions. If not, check the documentation that came with the drives, or check the drive manufacturer's site for manuals for your drives.

 

might help if you go into bios and force boot the cdrom first
