I have an hp pavilion zv5000. I got the bsod, but it cycles and i can't see what it says. It acts like it is going to boot up, and you can't get it to go to safe mode, it acts like it is going to bring windows up, then the bsod pops up for under a second, you hear a click, and then it starts all over again. A friend of mine took a flash drive and put linux slax on the flash drive and looked through my files. I can find most of my stuff I need, but the BIG problem is that I can't figure out how to pull them off onto another flash drive. There are 3 usb ports, but when I tried to put my mp3 player (coby) it doesn't even acknowledge it's there. Same for my Sony memory stick. I can't put the stuff on the flash drive that linux is on because it is not big enough to hold much. I don't know if the reason it is recognizing that usb port is because of the linux? Could I copy the linux onto a larger size flash drive and then move my stuff?

    Hi

As an alternative and I used this method a while back in work on one of the University lecturers PCs that had similar issue, was to download and install Acronis True Image (the trial 15 day) on a different PC and created the BootCD which is a lite version of the Acronis app.

Then with an external HDD, plugged that into the PC and then set the boot device to CDROM and booted to the Acronis bootCd and it managed to see the drive and allow me to Image the folders he wanted, then all I did was to plug the external HDD in the other PC that had the full True Image installed on and opend the image and copied all the data to the working PC.

Hi, lisa, right first of all you need to stop your 'puter from auto re-booting so we can ge tthe BSOD stop code.

    1. As for the usb slax set-up you using, i dont know why it wouldn't see other usb devices, try using and Ubuntu Live CD instead, ubuntu has no issues with any of the hundreds of usb drives i use, and windows wont play game with half of them.
One other option you have if your HDD is partitioned, you can move all the files to one partition and then format and install windows afresh on the other partition.

But lets see if we can find out the main issue withthe BSOD code :)

edit: halo's post sounds like a good way to go aswell

I would like to thank you all for your help! I got the Acronis onto it which allowed me to get back and actually boot the computer straight up without help! I am now getting my files off and then I am going to run some malware/virus software to see if I can get this 'puter back up and running for good! Thanks sooooo much! :)

Proof again of what a lifesaver imaging programs such as Acronis are. No user should be without one imo.

ATI is one great tool, Western Digital and Maxtor/Seagate each have a free version on their websites. It may be branded disk wizard or something, and it needs one of the disks youre working on to be the same brand of the company providing it. But its free.
