This of Norton Internet Security is major bloatware. It's on your system till you do a reformat like it or not. I'm on my 15th email from their support department or lack of I should say. I've had the same problem as you. I ended going with McAfee Internet Security 6.0. Something you should really consider.

I recently installed Norton Internet Sercurity 2004. After running it a couples of days. I returned it for a refund. It was major bloatware compared to other versions that Symantec had released. Upon removal I noticed that I still had over 450 megs of files in the Recycler Nprotect Bin. Something I was sure I had uninstalled. Aside from reformating is there any other way of removing these files?
I've tried Regclean JV16 Power Tools and it wasn't up to the task as was RegScrub and System Mechanic Pro. The Symantec knowledge base to use the command prompt. This was something that worked with previous releases of their product. It has no effect on the 2004 edition of their software.
If anyone is considering buying NIS 2004 seriously considering buying something else. Even on the fastest systems it will bog them down.

I hope others are reading this. Nortons tools are bloatware and cause more grief then they fix. I recently was called to fix a friends PC and uninstalling Nortons Systemworks (that a real smart computer guy said he needed) was all that was needed. The fact that Staples, CompUSa and other stores sell all in one suites in big stands in the middle of the aisle does not make it a good product.

Read threads in here about other tools you can use. As always, many all in one tools are not always the best answer and in the area of security, its even more true. There is NO spyware, virus, firewall package thats all in one that I would suggest using.

I agree with everybody here Norton firewall and utilites was uninstalled from my system in the year 2001 and has never since then and will never touch my computer ever again. It gave me nothing but nighmares. I can just imagine all the problems you are going through. I feel for you.

Another fact thats true Norton will be with you till you fdisk and reformat the drive. I tried very hard to remove that program. you could say that's when I learned not to mess with the registry if you do not know what you are doing.;)

Agreed, Norton is bloated crap. It's virus detection isn't always up to par either.

Personally I use Panda Antivirus Titanium, small, fast, and nice.

I've heard very highly of Nod32, Kaspersky, Pccillin.

I use to be a Kaspersky AV man, but their control centre got a little too bloated for me so when my subscription expired, I switched to Panda.

Still, KAV isn't anywhere near as bloated Norton or Mcafee, please don't get those 2. They will only give you grief.

Best advice is take it back to where you bought it and get your money back. I gave up on Symantec 12 months ago for total lack of support , and on trying to get rid of SystemWorks found to my horror just how much the beast had leeched itself everywhere in Registry. It took a lot of patient work using various tools to finally drive a stake through its heart but now I'm free of it so get yer money back and use a good (free) AV program and a Firewall. And Hey Symantec - RU out there?? Reading this and the above should give you thought about your once good and now fading reputation
