    Hi

    What Windows version you using?

Try if Avast is still listed in add remove to use Revo Uninstaller or failing that the AVAST uninstaller

Then run Ccleaner and use its cleaner and registry options, use the registry one until no items are found.

Hi lipstick, Have you tried the methods to remove Avast while in safe-mode? if not do so
[tap F8 as you boot up to get into safemode]

If the above doesnt help, have a look in... [this is assuming windows is installed on C: drive]
"C:\Program files" and "C:\Documents and settings\*your user name*\Aplication data" [edit: you have to have hidden files un-hidden to see the "application data" file]

Are there any files associated with Avast? .....If so delete them all, then run the Ccleaner Halo linked to and run the registry cleaner as many times as needed till it finds no more problems.

    Q

P.S. i do have one question sorta unrelated to your problem....

How come you are replacing Avast [which is known to be a pretty good AV] with Norton [which is known to be, for lack of a better word, cr@p]

hi - i had a virus on my pc - and it pulled up that it had been hacked into - My Avast antivirus had run out and i was only using the free one from Virgin,. Because i wasnt sure of the level the hackers had information off my pc - i went to the shop to buy antivirus and was told Norton was the best - i am from warrington and none of the shops locally had no avast - and i didnt want the possibility of putting my visa card details on my pc.

I am really grateful for all your help. thankyou xx

Eset Nod is very good too but you can use either of the two free ones Avast or Avira and be safe.

    Hi litpstick,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

I would suggest that you Google "Avast Removal Tool" and then download it and run it on your machine prior to installing Norton Internet Security 2009. If you still are unable to install Norton Internet Security, please follow the instructions in the following document.

Help with installing Norton Internet Security 2009

If you still are unable to install Norton Internet Security after running the Avast removal tool and following the instructions in the document above, click on the "No" link at the bottom of the page. You will then be brought to the Norton Customer Service page where you can contact technical support via phone, email or chat for further assistance with installing Norton Internet Security 2009.

    Thank you,
    Mike

    HI Mike

I have already spoke with the Norton help team - they couldnt remove the avast antivirus - but they loaded norton on - since i had norton on system my internet has either been very slow to open or none existent - I was really fed up - so i removed Norton off my system then i loaded avira free download from information given from senior member of the team - No i have hidden the avast files - up to now my system is up and running properly. great I did try to download avast and it kept coming up with setface error. but i am happy now my machine is working properly and i can actually surf on the net as usual - thanks to everyone for their help and advice xx
