    I am running Windows XP
    dial-up 56K modem
    23+ MB available (right? says 235726 K)
(do you need to know more?)

I have tried to download ad-aware 6.0 from two different sites, 2 tries here at MajorGeeks, 1 at another. It is supposed to be 1.45+ MB but each time it downloads 1.2+ and then just quits with no error message, no nothing. When I try to install from the downloaded .exe file I get this message: Could not initialize installation. File size expected=1540293, size returned=1214143.

Before I tried to download I ran the old ad-aware program that I had (5.3.0 or something) and then uninstalled that ad-aware--just wanted to be up to date.

thank you for all the help you can give!

Are you using a download manager/speed-up program?

I've had 2 different DL manager proggies do something like that to me.
I just DL'ed it from MG's and had no problems. In fact, it took less then 2 seconds.

now you're talking to a complete idiot!
I'm not running the things you're talking about. Can you tell me exactly what to download in order to download ad-aware? this MG thing you're talking about?

Meant to also ask: Could my ZoneAlarm firewal have anything to do with this problem? Or is it possible I deleted something in the previous sweep I made with ad-aware that I now need to do downloads??

    thanks so much!

    halo,
I do appreciate your help but when I click on that link all I get is a blank screen with "Done" down at the bottom.

I tried the link 2 posts above and got the same results, it shut down after dowloading 1.2 MB. I have just defragmented my disk and am about to reboot and try again. I don't think there is anything wrong with these links, it's something to do with my #%(*&^ computer. I have never had this problem before. I think I will try temporarily disabling my firewall if it doesn't work this time (it has messed up a couple of things before but not exactly like this).

    happy to say . . .

my problems were due to "computer gas" (hee hee)

Defragmenting and rebooting did the trick as I have now successfully downloaded adaware 6.0. Thank you new MajorGeeks friends!

As I am a novice wannabe web master I will be back!

    :)

    ad-aware installation

I downloaded ad aware for myself with no problems. I tried to download it on my friends super slow computer and here's my problem....It all downloads and installs OK but, when I try to run the progam, it says I'm missing a file. I've downloaded and installed like 4 or 5 times and the same thing keeps happening. Help me help my friend clean up his cpu. He runs windows 95.

    Re: ad-aware installation

I just checked LavaSoft's site. Adaware is for Windows 98 and above.

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Copied from the page from the url above:

Ad-aware is compatible with Microsoft® Windows® 98/Me/NT/2000 and XP Home and Professional

A 98 upgrade is a good idea on a PC that will not run XP. Most support from 95 is being phased out and this will get worse leaving him open to a lot of problems, especially security.

dingbat, welcome aboard, glad it worked out. We are here to help, not judge or pick on, you need anything else, holler. It was an odd problem, a defrag and scandisk would not have been anywhere near my first guess, so there ya go, even so called knowledgeable people cant always be right :)
