I have 3 drives on my computer.

    C:
    E:
    J:

Everything has been fine but lately all the auto-updates from things have almost filled the C Drive to the brim. It was only given 2 GB while the other ones have 20 and 16 GB a piece with tons of free memory.

I want to put more space on the C Drive since I keep getting messages saying I need to free up more space but there isn't anything left on the C Drive to delete unless I want to venture into the "Windows" folder and that is not something I want to mess with.

It's a 40GB hard drive partioned into 3 different drives...

Someone let me know if I can allot more drive space to my C: without losing what I have on my computer.

There is nothing on the C Drive other than stuff in the Windows folder that I've been told not to touch

    Thanks.

what about ur "my documents" folder? also, you can get rid of some backups that are made in your windows folder...mine is 2.4gigs...hmm, maybe i should clean it up..i know there's a bunch of .cab files that could probably go,but im not too sure

make sure you don't have any virtual memory being used on your c drive...you can change that in your system properties control panel...advanced tab, then performance...another advanced tab (anyone know a short cut?)...you'll see the settings at the bottom for virtual memory, click change, then you can set it to "no paging file" on c, then select another drive, and choose system managed size...that usually frees up some space...defrag...just rattling some ideas here.

2GB for a system drive is rather low. windows itself will take up about 500mb and another part of it will be taken up by the recycle bin, system restore (if ur using winxp or me), and the windows page file. Im assuming you are installing programs on an other drive.

ideally for your disk size, you should partition your drive into two - say 19GB each. Use the first one for OS and programs and the other to store your data - that way, anytime you want to reinstall your OS you dont need to backup - just format the system drive and reinstall.

A program like PartitionCommander (from http://www.v-com.com - I got mine off eBay for a lot less than I could anywhere else - version 9 is the latest) can automatically resize your partitions (always good to back up your important stuff just in case) and shift free space from one partition to where you need it. 5 to 10GB is good for the C: partition as Win2k and XP need a lot more space on C: than just what their files take up. Not to mention that many programs place some files on C: during installation even if you force them to install on another logical drive.
. You can reduce this need considerably by moving Temp, Tmp and Temp. Internet Files folders off the C drive (requires editing the registry in some cases). You can also reduce the virtual memory reserve on C: if you have adequate hardware memory. And the Print Spooler file location can also be moved. Another benefit to doing the above is reducing writes to the C: partition which reduces the risk of corruption.

Also go into Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disc Cleanup

You will be suprised how much space this will free up....search your HDD manually for any shiet that you dont need anymore...
