I have a problem which I know sounds a bit silly, but it's driving me crazy, and I would really like it solved if possible! I have IE 6.0.2800 with SP1 on a Compaq computer running Windows XP home. When I first got my computer, the Favourites had several folders that I didn't use, so I deleted them. One was a folder entitled "Links." I didn't need any of the links, so I deleted it. Only, this (now empty) folder won't delete! No matter how many times I delete it, or rename it, a new, empty folder name "Links" always pops back onto my list. I know I might sound crazy, but it's driving me nuts! Is there any way to get rid of it for good?

    Thank you so much!

Yes, but you have to edit your registry...

Start, Run and type in Regedit. Navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.

Data Type: REG_SZ [String Value] // Value Name: LinksFolderName
Value Data: [Set the String Value to a blank string]

Open Internet Explorer and manually delete the Links folder from Favorites Menu.

    Exit Registry and Reboot

I'm really sorry, but I'm not very smart with computers, and I'm not sure how to follow your instructions. I don't know how to set the string value to a blank string. Can you tell me how?

    Thanks so much!

In short, setting the string value to blank means deleting whatever is in the string value box, in this case the word links, which creates that folder. Heres step by step:

Under toolbar per above instructions, you should have a string on the right panel that is called "LinksFolderName". Right click on "LinksFolderName" and choose modify. Where the name "links" is, delete it and leave it blank.

If you do not have a LinksFolderName, let me know and I will explain creating a new string.

If it exist let me know if it works out :)

How did you make it? I tested it on my machine and it worked great. Im hoping it worked ok and you rode off into the sunset but am afraid you edited the wrong line.

To remove the Links folder simply make it hidden.

Thats a lovely idea if you like viruses and spyware that take advantage of people not checking the "show hidden files" options. Thats why we make sure people uncheck that option because these scumbags writing spyware and viruses are taking advantage of that default setting to hide their malware.

My solution completely removed the folder being created, going to the root of the problem, not covering it up.

Thanx Major Attitude, I'll keep that in mind. I never thought of that :) But hey, if you use Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D (or other cleaning programs) regularly, this could never happen :)

Sort of... Like anti-virus, you need updated definitions and protection that is on all the time. Even then, in the case of spyware, new variants can slip by. Make one typo going to google.com and you could be hijacked. Your thought works well if you have Ad-Aware Plus, Spy Sweeper, Pest Patrol or a antivirus program that detects and block spyware and hijacks. So, yes, scanning regulalry works well, but without protection always on, you could get caught sooner or later :) My big concern now is the hijacks. These really act like trojans and imho are a cross between spyware and a trojan. They are nasty and difficult to remove as seen in our spyware forum daily :)

I slept some too not longer after my last reply. Glad it worked out if not for anything else to be called amazing and at least pretend its true for the next hour or two until my wife comes home and reminds me otherwise ;)

    Dont be a stranger!

    Re: ACK!

I just updated to Service Pack 2 last night, and when I opened IE this morning, I had a new, empty, Favorites folder in my Favorites (just like that horrid Links folder!). I followed all the instructions that I used to get rid of my Links folder, but they haven't seemed to work this time; I rebooted my computer, and the Favorites folder popped right back up! Is there any way to get rid of this?

    Thanks so much!
