Please Help with Opening Word Files

I am currently writing my masters thesis and have saved it on a CD-RW. I took the disk to school one day to work on it there and now I can't get it to open on my computer at home as a document that be modified. It only opens as a read only. I tried changing the properties by right clicking on the item I want to open but I get some weird message saying "error applying attributes; access is denied." Is there any way I can make these files normal again.

 

Copy them off the CD. CD's always make everything appear as read only files. Even rewriteable CD's. You can't save directly to the CD from within word.

 

Are you saying that you are trying to open and change the attributes of the Word doc while it is on the CD-RW?

If so, drag and drop the file onto a HDD and then open it.

Also, make multiple copies of your thesis doc in case you lose the CD-RW, in the event that you do not have a backup and this is your only copy. A CD-WR can go bad and the data can become corrupt.

To conclude: Always use a file such as a Word doc while it is on the HDD. Backup to CD-RW, but make multiple copies on separate media of course. Do not use the Word doc while it is on the CD-RW as this is for backup purposes only.
