 I cannot seem to figure out what the problem is with my computer. When I try to look at images on some websites such as a ticker or my counter on ebay, as well as through emails, I am getting the "dreaded" red x. I have followed many directions and nothing seems to be working. I am also having issues trying to install the 2006 Norton antivirus. Could these be related? Any help you can give would be GREATLY appreciated! I have Windows XP. Thanks!

Could be some of the problem. What install issues are you having with NAV 2006 and did you have a previous version of Norton's installed?

If you would like to completely remove Norton's from your computer and see if that solves the problem with red x's you can use the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) in the link below. It may also help with a trouble free install of NAV 2006.

Okay, I'm really clueless with "computer speak". I just did the pre install scan and it told me:

    ------- Preinstall Scan Results -------

Unable to ensure access: MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Common Client

    Access rights scan summary:
    11 folders scanned.
    11 registry entries scanned.

    Summary:
    Number of Infections Found: 0
    Number of Files Repaired: 0
    Number of Files Quarantined: 0

What does this mean? And how can I fix it. At this point, I don't even know who to contact for support. Dell? Microsoft? Symantec? Can anyone help me figure this out? I would greatly appreciate it!

Oh...and I still can't see images on certain sites and emails as well. My computer is about to find itself a new home out the window!

    Thanks!

What did it do after it told you that? Does it stop the installation?

Kind of give us a brief summary of what is happening with Norton's. Are you trying to install NAV 2006 over a previous version? For example, did you have NAV 2005 installed on the computer?

When did the red x thing start? Recently, after you started trying to install NAV. Is this a new computer or have you had it awhile and just started having the problems.

Just tell us how all this started.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I have a Dell Dimension 4500S and we got it in 2002. My problems all began last week when I had to download Adobe acrobat in order to read pdf files. When I did this, I had some issue having something to do with Hkeys? (Sorry, I'm pretty computer illiterate when it comes to these kinds of things). I went to adobe's website and followed it's directions on getting permission. This is when I noticed that I can longer see images at some websites, but I thought, at that time, that the site I was looking at was down. Then, I purchased Norton antivirus 2006 on Monday, as my old antivirus had recently expired. I downloaded it and tried to install and that's when all my issues started with Norton. What is NAV 2006 and 2005? I did have a previous version of Norton that I was instructed to uninstall from my system...which I did. I have tried so many different things, including turning off my firewall, popups, and spybot. Do I need to call one of those computer geek companies to come to my house to figure this out? Thanks for all your help!

    Hi Kim,

OK. I apologize for using abbreviations, thats my mistake. NAV is just short for Norton Anti-Virus.

    1. If you went through Add/Remove in the Control Panel to uninstall Norton's it should have removed everything. But maybe not, and that is interfering with you trying to install the new version. I would try "totally" uninstalling Norton's from the computer, sometimes just disabling it doesn't help if there are files or settings left over from the previous version. Go to the Control Panel and using Add/Remove uninstall Norton Anti-Virus, then use the tool here, http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4749 to make sure that all the files left over from Norton's are gone.

    2. Now, before you try and reinstall Norton's again, look/try and see if the red x problem still occurs. I think that will fix it.

    3. If everthing is ok now you need to install an Anti-Virus. I wouldn't use Norton's if I were you, you can get a refund from them just like you ordered it. From what I have heard they are very good about that and you just got it Monday. We have several "free" Anti-virus programs here at Major Geeks that do as good a job or better than Norton's. AVG Free Edition here, http://majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition_d886.html is very good and I promise you and your computer will be much happier with it. Give it a try (if you want) and if you are not satisfied with it you can always go back to Norton's.

    4. If none of the steps above help you might go back to the Adobe website and see what changes you made and change them back. See if it makes a difference. Just kind of back-track and try re-enabling those changes you made to install Adobe, Don't uninstall Adobe, that's not necessary , just the changes you had to make to install it.

Hope this helps, let us know. :)
