please help xp back to 98?

This is probably a stupid question, but my not so tech savvy brother installed windows xp professional edition on my win 98 pc. I don't have the resources to run it properly, I would like to put my original restore disk in and take my pc back to win 98....my brother says this will not work, is that true? Thank your very much for any help or suggestions.

Download the Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft.

Boot from the floppies enter the Recovery Console. Select the insatllion for repair

Enter the following command:

diskpart /delete C:
diskpart /add will create a new partition, select FAT32 if prompted for file system type.
That will delete the partition.

You can now install Win98.

Unless my brain isn't functioning properly, this method will wipe any and all data you have stored on your computer. But, at least you can reload windows.

What he is doing, to clarify, is indeed wiping the NTFS partition out and reformatting as FAT. The assumption here is that your not so savvy brother does not understand that he probably formatted to the NTFS file system when he installed XP. This is a better choice for Windows XP, but Windows 98 does not know what it is, so thats why he thinks 98 can not be installed on the machine. All that is needed, as Shadow_Puter_Dude pointed out, is to reformat the drive to FAT32 so 98 can see it. Let your bro know, next time, he can always install XP on the FAT32 partition that Windows uses to see if it works ok and can convert to NTFS later, OR learn how to setup dual operating systems, you could have run both.
