hi could someone please help me i havent had sound on my comp for a while now and no one seems to know why.
it started when i reinstalled windows xp i had to do this because i had a virus that stopped it from working. after i reinstalled xp my comp was fine except i had no sound.
i found a cd (Foxconn motherboard installation cd) which had RealTek AC'97 on it, i tried to install it but when it gets to about 80% a windows logo comes up saying, ''Realtek AC'97 Audio has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows xp ect.. so i tried to download it from the realtek site but it said the same if i continue the download it installs AvRack and nothing else it also shows up in the add/remove programs list but it doesnt work.

It should be OK to install a sound card driver. However, you might have one of those things where programmers don't like to do forward compatibility so that you'll have to buy their new product.

Just use the driver that it says isn't compatible, unless you can find a better one online. All you have to do is install that one and do a windows update and you should be able to find an updated driver if there is one. If not, the worst thing that can happen is that something screws up, in which case you go to right click my computer->properties->hardware->device manager and find your sound card and delete the driver for it.
