Three fixes exist for this problem, a reboot might be required to see if it works.

My understanding is if you disable previewing files that may help. If you cant find it, try typing "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" from the command line.

Also, disable indexing. Go to Start, Run and type in "services.msc". Find Indexing, stop the service, choose disable, then apply.

Look for thumbs.db in the problem folder, it is probably hidden, so enable viewing of hidden files. It will be recreated. Since you can not open the folder, you might try using search for Thumbs.db in the problem folder and deleting it from there.

    Let me know.

I have had similar problems when multiple media players are installed, and each one has been set as the default application for opening the media files. They end up conflicting and Explorer will error out. Either remove the media players you rarely use, or change their settings so that only one is set to be the default application for .AVI and .DIVX extensions (and any other extensions that may be a movie file like .MP4, etc).
    Good luck!

    Hi

Funny enough I had this exact issue on my friends new PC lastnight, she was moving some movies from one PC to this new on and when we went to test the files opening the folder cause explorer to fault at xvid.ax

So fix for us was to get this updated codec pack ( dont mind its name as it works in XP too ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Codec_Package_d5326.html
