Hi, i have had enough of this problem now and really need some help so ill try and be as detailed as i can. I have a HP Pavillion a6305.uk running windows vista home premium, the main points of my dxdiag are included below for further information.

The problem is all i did was change from the original HP w1907v 19" LCD screen to a new monitor and now ive lost my sound. The sound is provided by a double end 3.5mm jack from the back panel green port of my soundcard to 'audio in' on my new monitor, with speakers built in. Control Panel>Sound>Playback shows 'speakers not plugged in' despite the jack cable. A test through Properties>Advanced>Test shows 'failed to play test tone'.

The computer has reverted to 'Realtek Digital Audio Output', the SPDIF. A test of this shows sound levels playing but obviously i get no sound. My Realtek Audio Manager shows no 'Speaker' tab and i also have 'enable jack detection' checked but nothing happens when i plug and unplug the jack.

I have recentley formatted the computer to no avail as the problem remains the same. I have also tried and tried again uninstalling and reinstalling drivers but am open to any suggestions.

Is it possible that the jack or soundcard itself would be at fault and i need to buy new ones? Plugging headphones into the soundcard does not provide any sound either.

    Thank you in advance.
    Scott

Somehow, check the new speakers to be sure they are capable of producing sound. You can do this by unplugging the audio cable from the green port on the rear of the PC and plugging it in to any audio source like a TV, radio, portable CD player, etc. Once you've determined the speakers are 100% (and I'm sure they are) go to the Programs listing in the Vista Control Panel and uninstall the current sound drivers. Restart the PC. Vista will probably try to reinstall the drivers upon restarting; try to cancel it if possible. Then install this audio driver update from HP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3660121&os=2093&lang=en (be sure the speakers are still UNPLUGGED from the computer). When the install has finished, power down the PC. When it is off, plug in the speakers to the rear green port. Double check all your audio connections and power up the PC. With any luck, you should have sound!

Hi, thankyou for your quick reply. I have tried your solution but am having problems when uninstalling the current driver. I cannot see a way of cancelling windows reinstalling the old driver when it starts back up, even trying to click close as soon as the desktop has loaded is too slow, so an installation of the new driver from HP has no effect. I plugged the audio cable into my ipod and got sound from the new monitor no problem!
