I have a windows xp based computer that i use for school.Recently it has failed to recognize anything but my mouse that is being pluged into the USB ports aka my printer i have checked the settings for the usb ports and have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the printer but the pc still will not recognize the printer or my phone i can plug it into my laptop and it will recognize it and works fine.I am not real familiar with plug and play or how it works but it doesnt recognize it even if i plug it into the same port that my mouse works in? i have tried to roll back the drivers and to restore my pc to a prior point but it still willnot recognize my printer as it has before? please help me as school starts back on the 25th and i really need it to work.
thank you all in advance for any help you can offer

Ok this is kind of long and I'm going to suggest a few things to try..
    1. create a restore point name it 12 march 09 or anything that will distinguish it just in case you have to go back to it...
    2. Unplug your printer, go to add printer and delete it from that space.

3.install this program and run it also run the the registry cleaner part of it (be sure to save the registry before any changes are made) reboot
    4. go back to device manager and see if the unknown device conflict is there. If it's there right click on the device and delete the item reboot.
    5. when windows starts it will detect new hardware let it install the hardware and you should get a message that the new device is installed and ready for use
    6. Plug in the printer. when it ask for the drivers or says have disk click have disk or browse, insert the disk and browse for the drivers via the disk. install the drivers from the disk , once it says it's installed print a test page ..

If this doesn't work post back by then someone else should have read this thread and maybe they have an additional suggestion

Hey Slayer, It is possible that static electricity has fried the usb circuit on the main board of your pc. I've seen this happen before.

While the USB mouse still works now, all the USB ports will probably stop working soon.

The easy solution is to pull the hard drive, connect it to a sata/ide to usb adapter, and copy your files to the laptop, then connect your printer to the laptop.

The second solution is do the above + replace the mainboard in your PC, put the hard drive back in, and reformat the PC, reinstall windows, and you should be good to go.

Wish there was an easier way for you, but anything else would just be spinning your wheels.
