Please help

i got a computer from a friend he said it need minor work so i brought it home figuring that all it may need is a good scan disk and defrag.but i turn it on and go to the start menu and next to all my tabs instead of the usual > theres an 8 and instead of check boxs i have this little thing i cant begin to try and explain instead of the close button on a window i have an r the maximize button is a 2 and the minimise button is an 0 with a line through it

has anyone ever heard of anything like this? if so please tell me how to change it to normal. I would be extreamly grateful shes a good pc other than that thanks

 

IF i had just bought a pc that needed work and i didnt need any files from it i would do a full reinstall of xp (i assume its xp)

Have you run any trojan,spyware,adware scans?
Have you got any anti virus?

Can you tell us the specs of the pc?

 

my computer is running 98 se has 128 mb ram and pentium 2 prossesor
i got it for free so i cant really complain im just tryin to fix it
i also dont have the money to go out and bye windows or i would have just reinstalled it to begin with
yes i have scaned it with avg and got nothing

 

I doubt you could even "go out and buy" 98.
It's been out of print, so to speak for many years.

However, it can be found laying around all over the place, like leaves in the fall.
Every tech, geek, nerd and putzer has at least one copy of it.
Running 98\SE Upgrade from your existing windows setup would probably fix up your OS. The re-install of 98/SE from an OEM CD can also be done.
That goes even deeper to fix problems in 98.

I've done it often and it solves a multitude of problems.

It's possible you have a corrupt font file. The font in question is the martlett.ttf . Re-install that and see if that helps any.

 

thanks guys i replaced the file and now it looks normal i wonder why i didnt think of it before
