    Greetings All!

Okay, finally talked the ol' lady into it and I'm building a new PC!

I got a good deal on this mobo and wanted everyone's opinion. I know ya'll won't be shy about telling me if I got screwed or not! I plan to run a Celeron D 2.5 Ghz (or higher) CPU with a seperate DVD burner and CD-ROM. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the GeForce 6600 256 Mb AGP vid card as well. I know this board will run the CPU and the vid card, but can it handle the drives? Everyone's opinion is appreciated!

    Here's the info...

    Foxconn 648FX4MR-ES Socket 478 mobo

Here's a link to the specs...

    1) Isn't Celeron D the dual-core processor line? If so, does this motherboard have dual FSBs? I don't know about anyone else, but my experiences with Celeron processors hasn't been favourable.
    2) I don't see any indication that this board supports RAM in dual-channel mode...that's a bit of a drag if you ask me, but it may not be bad for you..what is the RAM you hope to use?

But those are both just personal opinions... don't let them influence you TOO much.

it says in the stats that it supports Celeron D & P4 with H/T... I'll have to make sure that my CPU isn't dual FSB I guess. The CPU I have now is a Celeron & I haven't really had any problems with it. I guess I'll see what kind of deal I can get between a Celeron & a P4 when I'm ready to get the CPU...

as far as the RAM, I was planning to run at least 512 Mb of PC3200 (400 Mhz) DDR SDRAM and I don't think that'll be a problem for the board...

    thanks for the comments! :D

From what I've heard, you can use a dual-core processor on a single FSB, just that it might cause some heat issues. I know the P4 478s definitely cause some heat issues. That's why I have THIS http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=004769&cid=FN.349
    monstrosity in my PC. Heh.

Also, this board won't allow you to use your ram in dual-channel mode, meaning it will be a bit slower...

Im almost 100% sure that Celeron Ds ARENT dual core... Yea this board can handle all the drives... youll want to set them up like this:

Take the cable that plugs into the harddrive, plug it into the BLUE motherboard slot, take the other end of the cable (it should have 3 plug spots, 1 for mobo, 1 for HD, 1 for extra) your going to use the extra on your CD rom. You may need to purchase an extra cable to plug into the other slot and your other device.

Also, Im not sure, since i only saw 2 IDE plugins, one might be the Floppy plug, so it might not work as i mentioned above. If the other slot turns out to be a floppy slot, refer to your manual (i should think they would cover it) Also, Foxconn is kind of an offbrand, for motherboards anyway, Ive heard of them makeing heatsinks and such but this is the first mobo ive seen them make.

Ah as i just read, you can only have 1 harddrive cable and 1 floppy... So i dont think youll be able to run both CD and DVD...

If youd like to consider another motherboard heres one by ABIT, as you can see its ABIT more and ABIT better... hehehe
