Brother has just bought a comp from pcworld and as he just goes on the network for very short time ,as his last old comp ,he just plug it into the phone socket and he was happy .
The salesman said you can not do that with the new comps and he would need a PC Line 56k usb mini modem ,so he bought that too.
The modem just plugs into the phone socket and the other end with usb into the comp and green light shows modem working.
A disk supplied the modem drive for vista ,but comp when trying to get on line comes up with message "A cable is not plugged in netwirk adaptor (local area) ????
He also got fitted by the shop Norton 360 security (would u have to configure the fire wall to allow the modem to work)
any help would be appreciated :)

This sounds as if the computer is attempting to connect through the LAN port, and not the USB port where the modem is.

What Operating System is your brother using?

Are you sure the correct driver for the OS has been installed?
