Plugging in network adaptor

My son had just bought a new computer system (AMD processor, Windows 7) fitted with a number of USB 2.0 and 3.0 sockets.

When trying to connect to the net, it appears that only plugging the network adaptor into one of the sockets on the top of the case allows the system to connect to the router. The connection fails when the sockets on the rear are used.

Apart from it just being a hardware fault (!) is there any simple explanation of why this might be?

    Thanks

Could possibly be interference from the wires out of the back of the case or the physical location of the tower causing wireless interference. For either of these possibilities, try moving the tower from it's present location and doing some wire/cable shifting to see if you can get a signal.
If it's a hardware fault with the USB connectors, look in Device Manager in the System Devices and see if there are any indications of problems with USB root/hub controllers. If so, possibly an uninstall of them, reboot and see if the install on reboot solves the problem or possibly try updating the chipset drivers for the motherboard.
Have you tried inserting a flash drive to see if the drive is recognized? If it is, then your USB connectors should be good.

If it is a hardware fault that can't be solved quickly, I would be checking the warranty provisions.

Thank you. It was indeed the physical location screening the signal. Odd, as the previous computer worked fine in the same position!

    Much appreciated.
