New Horizons left town this afternoon, breaking gravity at just over 36,000 mph...the fastest rocket ever!

An interesting note: the ashes of the Discoverer of Pluto, Clyde Tombaugh, are aboard. It will get an acceleration assist from Jupiter in 13 months, and will reach Pluto on or about July 14, 2015.

WHY keep mouth shut? Why not enlighten us all to what you would have said/commented on about this event, as you did make the effort to post in this thread why stop with a vague one liner, I and no doubt others would like to hear your views?

That's breath taking. To think a rocket hurtling through our Solar System at that speed will take 9-1/2 years to get to Pluto. Wow.

I couldn't have sound when it was lauched but wasn't there two extra boosters after the first five? If that's the case then it's the first launch I've ever seen with seven. I've never grown tired of watching launches since the early '60s. I hope one day to see one live.

    Pretty awesome stuff!

Maybe when it gets back, they can reclassify Pluto from being a planet, to a lump of ice.
