    Hiya Everybody!!! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I hope you can help because this is driving me a little batty. I'm sitting here watching something in the Real Player window and I go to turn down the volume on the window and then my ENTIRE SOUND SYSTEM just TURNED ALL THE WAY DOWN as soon as I clicked on the volume bar!! I can BARELY HEAR a thing!! And the volume bar never even moved! Now I've got the physical volume botton on the speakers turned all the way up and I've got all the volume settings in the computer turned up ...including Nvidia Mixer. It should be BLARING!!

But I can barely hear it. If I mute it ...I can't hear it at all. This is Strange...http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

    What's happening?? http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Does anybody have any suggestions?? I can't understand why this happened. Please help if you could. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Try playing a windows information sound i.e "exclamation" in the sounds icon in control panel to eliminate realplayer and nvmixer.

    Ok ..I'll try that..

Oh and my OS is Win XP Home w/sp 2

    Sorry about that! :D

Ok ...did that and it STILL sounds the same ...hardly NO SOUND at all ...I have to jack it way up to hear it! I know the speakers are connected properly and the connections to the pc and all that has been checked and rechecked ...it's NOT that ...

It's like something jammed up when I clicked on the real player's volume and now something is kind of "masking" the sound?? If that makes sense...http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

i would go through all your media players and make sure that all the volumes are max ... I always adjust the volume with my amp as opposed to using the real player/winamp/control panel/etc controls as I was always having similar problems until I started doing that

Real Player is a horrible piece of ****. I don't usually encourage problem removing instead of solving, but in this case just get rid of the player and after that re-installing the sound drivers would be a good idea.

    I agree ...I can't stand Real Player either ...

Ok I uninstalled RP and then REINSTALLED my Sound Drivers and STILL NOTHING!!

    It's STILL NOT WORKING!!! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I just took everything apart and put it back together again ... ALL THE CONNECTIONS are secure and there's nothing wrong with the equipment. My volume botton goes directly through the subwoofer (CREATIVE) and it's jacked all the way up. I'm hearing the SOUND then ...but VERY lightly!! It's like there's some huge WALL in front of it and I'm hearing it through the wall. And when I go through the task bar and check the volume ..it's turned all the way up too. But when I mute it ...I can't hear ANYTHING at all ..not even the muffled sound.

So the speakers are working ...I feel like this has something to do with a setting on the computer somewhere, a conflict ...or a driver. I dunno.

    It's so WEIRD!!!

try this: if you haven't already ..
goto the sound control panel> volume>advanced>options>make sure advanced controls has a check next to it>properties

make sure your sound card is selected in the "mixer device" menu at the top ... adjust volume for playback ... under "volume controls" make sure everything that you use is checked, particularly "wave" and "play control" .. then make sure everything is at top volume

Yep ...did that already. But I went ahead and tried it again according to your instructions. Unfortunately ...it's STILL messed up. It's so frustrating now. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I do REALLY appreciate you taking the time and trying to help me solve this strange problem I have ... Thanks! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

what about the equalizer? you might try looking through your media players and make sure the equalizers are all at 0dB or max but I would only set it to max for troubleshooting purposes... you might have inadventantly lowered the EQ w/ real player, maybe:confused: course now that you uninstalled it, might be hard to raise it again

  14. EnchantedDreams

    EnchantedDreams Specialist

Okies...I had to reinstall Real Player because my AOL won't work without it properly ...I went in and raised the EQ everywhere I could find it and STILL NOTHING!! Just a whisper ...I can hear the speakers humming when I have it jacked that loud just to hear the FAINT sound...

Does this make any sense?? :(

  15. ~Pyrate~

    ~Pyrate~ MajorGeek

have you tried headphones? maybe your speakers went bad or are in the wrong port? is surround sound set up right?

also why does AOL need real player? does it have media functions?

  16. Clark_Kent

    Clark_Kent MajorGeek

Did you check you cable (connection)???

  17. EnchantedDreams

    EnchantedDreams Specialist

Yes, AOL needs real player because of media functions. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I checked my cable connection ...but if it was bad ...I wouldn't be able to sign online...

Ok so I went ahead and broke out this TINY brand new 'sound' system that came free with my computer last year. So I unwrapped it all and connected it to my computer instead of the speakers & subwoofer I have now ...and STILL even with NEW SPEAKERS & SUBWOOFER ...I STILL COULD BARELY HEAR the music playing ...

So it HAS to be some weird conflict or setting inside the computer. This has happened before (I think ...I have the worst memory) and I found a setting I just raised ...but that was in the volume taskbar ...I checked that again and it's all raised UP as far as it goes ...

It's like real player short circuited some driver or something??

    Whadda ya think? http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Try restarting the computer. It might sound stupid, but I've solved an enourmous number of problems, that I couldn't deal with any other way, simply by restarting the computer.

    EnchantedDreams Specialist

    Oh I know! I totally agree. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

But I've restarted it at least TEN times since this whole audio mess started. Easy. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Unfortunately ...it's not changed ANYTHING AT ALL! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I'm sooooo driving myself crazy with this ...I'm a very and I mean EXTREMELY audio person ...(and I'm 3/4 deaf!) and not being able to hear my system properly is really upsetting me and making me miserable and riddled with frustration. WHAT is making this happen??? It's soooooooo STRANGE! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

But thank you for your suggestion! EVERYTHING is worth trying! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

sounds like your plugged into the line out socket rather than the speaker one?

  21. EnchantedDreams

    EnchantedDreams Specialist

Yep~ I know it does. But I unplugged everything and replugged it back in at least THREE different times now. Unfortuantely, no that's not the answer either. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Remember that this happened when I was watching a real player media file and I clicked on the volume bar to raise it up and then all the sound just shut down to the bare whisper it is now. I have no idea if it's connected or not but it sure feels like it is.

    Whatcha think?http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

do you have another set of speakers you can try?

  23. ~Pyrate~

    ~Pyrate~ MajorGeek

the reason I asked is I'm thinking that possibly there is a setting in AOL somewhere that messed up the sound? ... I'm just throwing ideas at ya

have you tried a system restore?

I had a problem that was similar and had to uninstall the audio hardware and clean the registry of all AC97 sound drivers. I was using the Abit AT7 onboard AC97 audio. After a reboot and no sound I "found new hardware" and used the latest driver.
This is not an elegant solution, but it worked for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions ...I REALLY appreciate them!! No matter what! Please keep them coming.. :)

Yes ~ I've tried another whole sound system of speakers and a subwoofer ...STILL NO CHANGE...

Yes ~ I checked all the AOL settings and didn't see one anywhere that could be messed up ...BUT I COULD uninstall it and reinstall ...I'll try that soon ...it requires A LOT of backing up ...

NO ~ I DID NOT try a restore ...I don't know how to do it. :)

Sound DRIVERS? Ok ..walk me through that one again? Where do I get specific sound drivers for my board?? I just used the unified NVIDIA Nforce 2 drivers ....

I'm not very educated on computers but I can walk my way around one no problem as long as I have detailed instructions. I've been in the BIOS ..everywhere. I'm not afraid of my PC and love learning about it. :) So these suggestions are like lessons for me too. So thank you! :D

You guys ROCK ..as always... ;)

Then get the latest chipset drivers from www.nvidia.com .

You might want to try removing the sound device from the device manager before installing the drivers, make sure that the sound drivers ARE being re-installed correctly.

You say you've made sure the Wave fader and the Master volume fader are turned right up in the volume control panel? Go to sound properties, go options, properties, make sure all the checkboxes below are checked. Make sure that all the appropriate faders are up to full, and everything is muted accordingly (i.e. microphone is muted, line-in is muted...).

The reason I say this is sometimes you get faders like "MP3" rather than simple wave, which can be changed by programs like realplayer...

    Ok...

I reinstalled the whole motherboard drivers (that's where the audio drivers would be..correct?) and there's STILL NO CHANGE. So maybe I didn't UNINSTALL the audio drivers correctly first?? Would that make a difference even?

I have just hit the exact same problem as EnchantedDreams.

I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard which I am running the on board sound.

When I was running PowerDVD I went to lower the volume on the players skin and I lost 95% of the volume.

You only way at the moment I can achieve what I would call good sound is to set the Wave Volume to max and the master volume to 5%.

I am going to try to reinstall the drivers tonight, will let you know how I get on.

If it comes to it I will just chuck a sound card in.

    I have fixed it!

I hope this helps anyone having the same problem with onboard sound.

Uninstall all the drivers from the device manager, shut down and restart, reinstall sound drivers and sucess :D
