Okay, so you only have two issues?

    Mouse does not work? usb/ps2?
Computer doesn't shut down, but gives message: "its now safe to turn off your computer."?

PS2 devices will not work if plugged in while the PC is running. You must have the PC powered off before plugging in a PS2 mouse or keyboard. It is possible to permanently damage the PS2 ports if you plug in PS2 devices with the PC powered on. I worked on an HP tower where the PS2 keyboard port is fine, but the PS2 mouse port died because the owner of the PC bought a new PS2 mouse, and he pulled the old one out, and installed the new one with the PC powered on. This killed the PS2 mouse port. Does the PS2 keyboard port work? Have you tried a different PS2 mouse? Have you tried other USB devices to see if the USB ports work, like a flash drive or keyboard or even a printer? Have you tried all the USB ports in the front and back of the PC? Windows update typically has USB drivers available if your current USB drivers have been uninstalled for some reason, but I don't know if this applies to PS2 or not. I found this info at the Microsoft web site, maybe it will help.
    ;)

    Good luck!

Hmmmm..... well, if neither a USB or PS2 mouse is working, but the USB ports work, and a PS2 keyboard works, then we know that something is up with the mouse drivers. Did you look at the info in the link I posted above? Here it is again: http://social.answers.microsoft.com.../thread/3ef24540-6395-433b-b498-88bf105a2fa3/ Have you checked the Device Manager with a mouse plugged in? There might be a question mark or unknown device listed; this would help us pinpoint the exact issue. Also, check for the following files:
    C:\Windows\System32\mouse.drv
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mouclass.sys
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mouhid.sys
You might have to enable viewing of hidden system files and folders to see the files. Let us know if any of these files aren't listed; you should also check to see if the Windows Plug-N-Play service is running as it should be. Click Start, click Run, type services and press Enter. Scroll down to the Plug-n-Play service and be sure it's set to Automatic and that it is started; if it isn't, right click it and make the appropriate changes, then restart the PC. Good luck, and let us know how it goes...

:-o My mistake... It should be services.msc so that's my fault, I apologize.... take your time with the info in the link I posted, maybe somebody you know is a bit more familiar with English... if you have your Windows XP install disc, you can run the 'system file checker'. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and press Enter. Type sfc /purgecache and press Enter. Allow this command to run, it shouldn't take more than 2-3 minutes, usually about 30 seconds. Insert your XP install CD and exit the blue window when it opens. Again, in the command prompt window, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. The can take some time, so be patient. If you get messages asking you to insert your CD, click "Retry". If these messages are continuous, and you have a 2nd CD drive, move the disc to the 2nd drive and click "Retry" or "Continue". Allow the scan to finish. When it's finished, go to the Device Manager, and uninstall the device with the yellow exclamation point ! - this may be difficult without a mouse, but try to uninstall it, then restart the PC. Hopefully the system file checker will have fixed the corrupt driver, and uninstalling and restarting will replace it. The only other thing I can think of would be to perform a safe repair install of Windows. Follow the steps in this guide to perform a safe Windows repair. This will NOT erase any data or programs when performed correctly as long as no other problems are present (for example, user profile problems can result in a loss of all shortcuts and application functionality, but all documents/music/pictures will be OK).
    GOOD LUCK!

(in the "sfc" commands above, there is a space between sfc and the slash / .... if you don't have a space after the "sfc", the commands won't work)
