Because of a rootkit infection I must reformat and install my XP OS. I hope that someone can point me to a good procedure/guideline for doing this. This is my first time so be gentle, although I can handle most of what I am about to get.:major

    Thanks

To completely reformat your pc would be a last resort have you considered trying a repair install of you current O.S. This way you can keep your settings and software that is already installed.

    Hello Wunder,

The conclusion from the malware expert said "At this point, I am going to recommend a complete clean install from scratch. When I say "clean" I mean deleting all partitions and then creating a new partition, formatting it and then reinstalling the OS."

So, having persevered more than a week with this expert, who I am greatful to and putting up with a crappy computer trying to phish my personal info when logging in to my banks/FI/CC accounts, I would like to follow this advice in the near future and start fresh.

Hoping you or someone else can direct me to a nice procedure to do this.

    Kind Regards

Did your PC come with Restore or Recovery CD's? If so you start with the OS disk then the Driver Disk, after that your choice to continue to re-install all the applications (bloatware) that came pre-installed on your PC.

If you can copy or burn your e-mail settings, address book and any other important docs (music and pictures) because all will be gone.

Your manufacturer's website usually has a help section and a step-by-step reformat procedure.

    g'day poppi22
The is a lot of preparation you will need to do before you do a fresh install of your O.S.I have found the guide here " http://tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm " fairly comprehensive.if you read this guide carefully it will show you what is needed to complete your task.Maybe even if you print it out to have on hand when you need to refer to it.Hope this helps you good luck.
