Being blitzed by blue screen every day now, Pool_Corruption, Bad_Pool_Header, Bugcode etc, I have enough knowledge to look at, then upload the dumps, but little hazy beyond that point, sure could use some 'rookie' advice

The dumps refer to windows core files ntoskenl.exe and win32.sys.

You don't say what your O/S?

Run Check Disk followed by the System File Checker

Then let us know how you get on

    Sorry, it is winxp.

I had previously ran the chkdsk, but not the System File Checker, it failed again after I ran it.

I will do it again and follow it up with the System File Checker.

Don't know if it has any bearing or not, but I'm getting a single beep out of the case about once every 45 minutes, never heard this before.

Do the checks from safe mode, preferably.
If checkdisk /r won't complete try /f first this is less aggressive. Sometimes you have to run it several times to complete.

Random variable blue screen errors are usually a sign on either a failing hard drive or failing memory (or poor connections).

Make sure your data is safe somewhere else then
running a memory tester would be your next step.

I ram the Recovery Console (chkdsk /r) and got the following:

"the volume appears to have one or more unrecoverable problems"
    30156568 Total allocations
    15250554 available

Not a computer expert, but this looks ominous to me, any advice?

How old is the drive? It may be wearing out.

Chkdsk /r check files and sectors.
Chkdsk /f checks files only and is less demanding.

If you have followed the advice in post #4 and it did not clear it download the manufacturers specific hard drive tester. These are more thorough than check disk.

Thanks for the replies, and after some more effort found "this volume is beyond repair" or words to that effect, so stuck another drive in, reinstalled winxp pro without problem, but then ran into a major other problem which I'm sure belongs in another forum but I'll finish the tale here.
Did a backup of "my Documents" with the windows utility prior to new installation and now on attempted restore it tells me "no entries found" aaargghh!
Certainly there, listed as "backup" ,windows backup file, 28,059 kb
If it isn't one thing it's another, computers!
