Calling my house after 7:00pm is a death sentence unless it's my cell phone ringing.
Sears guy called up and I picked up the phone before the upstairs phone rang (delays ring for some reason) .. any way,

Me: " you have about 3 seconds to identify yourself"
Him: "Hi this is sears calling, is Heather there?"
Me: "Let me set this straight for you.. do you know it's 20 after 8? If this phone rings and wakes up my son, YOU can take care of him.. do I make myself clear? What are you doing calling people after 8pm..never call my house after 7pm.. is that understood?"
Him: '"Oh, I'm sorry sir.. "
Me: "Good, so this is how this is going to work. I will never EVER give you a credit card number over the phone so you print out the papers that are needed for the warranty renewal and mail them to me and I'll send it in.. got that?
    Him: "Yes sir.. "
Me: "Good , get that done and I'll send it in" *click*

me=complete a**hole tonight.. sorry sears dude you called at the wrong time..

    @ Kodo...I am afraid!!

Usually, after 6:00 p.m. all the numbers that aren't in my "unrestricted access" list (and there are damn few of 'em!) get re-routed the auto-answer machine. They get the 'pleasure' of hearing endless messages and wait cues, with background elevator music - ha!, ha!.

I know these caller have a job to do ... but they do pick the WRONG times to call sometimes and I guess he picked a MAJOR wrong time to call the Kodo household ;)

Thats not very nice to treat someone like that. They're just trying to do their job and make a living.

Wait till your son gets older and you can do what I do...

    "Hello is Mr. Walker there?"

    "Yeah, hang on one second."

Turn to son, "Papa is on the phone..."

give phone to 3yr old son

"Papa? I went poopy on the toilet. I want a saw. We went fishing Papa. Papa papa papa?"

    "Mommy, papa isnt' talking anymore.."

Honey, you have no idea what it's like to have your son go to sleep and then get woken up by someone calling at 8:20 pm and then have to spend the next hour or so trying to get him back to sleep.. sorry, I was pleasant with him.. he was rude.. you're in the wrong thread.

Wow. Way to treat the guy doing his job like that. Here is an idea...If you don't want the phone ringing....SHUT OFF THE RINGER! Better yet, UNPLUG IT!

Hook up an answering machine in a room where your kid can't here it. There is no reason to treat a guy doing his job like that. I'm sure you wouldn't want to be treated like that if you were him.

:DDid you inform them not to call about your warranty after that time or did you assume that their callers were hired from the Psychic Friends Network after it went under;). Tell everyone who might call you your conditions and they will respect them, if they don't, they don't deserve your business. I have four kids, each a year apart, I know how it is. There is no reason to take it out on some poor working stiff.

  10. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

wow.. here's a thought.. it's my friggin house.. he's calling ME.. not the other way around. How about a little respect for ME. When I was growing up, I never thought about calling someone past 8pm. These telemarketers need to respect the lifestyles of the people they are calling. I respect that the guy is doing his job, but he didn't have to courtesy to call at a decent time.. that's the wrong thing to do with me mr.man. Not only that, but they've tried to call before and I didn't have the time nor the opportunity to pick up the phone.. does he leave a message? no.. that just makes me not want to talk to him even more.

I always here this argument. "way to treat a [person] doing [their] job.." I don't buy it. You can do the job and still respect your potential clients. These people are viscious and will not stop calling you until you respond to them.. so I responded. Had he called at a decent time I would have been more than nice to him. When that clock clicks 7:00 pm, I go from Mr. Nice-guy to Mr. A-hole in a bout 2 seconds. THIS IS MY TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO ACCOMODATE ANYONE BY MODIFYING MY WAY OF LIFE.. including having to turn the ringer off on my phone.. I only have 2 phones in my house. If I'm sleeping and the ringer is off in our upstairs room, how do you suppose I hear the ringer on the downstairs phone ? you don't suppose you say? You didn't know I only had two phones you say? no problem. it's ok.. ignorance is bliss.

sorry if I seem abrassive.. but your comment assumes that I am the one that has to accomodate people who call me. That's like me knocking on your door when you're eating dinner and me complaining that you won't let me in to try to sell you something.. but you have to accomodate me now dont' ya.. so don't be rude to me, let me in.. after all it's the 9th time I've knocked on your door and not left a message for you when you didn't answer.

so I disagree with you now.. but don't go on thinking that I'll carry a grudge against you because we don't see eye to eye.. that's not my style.
    peace.

  11. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

Right, as if I'm more psychic than the next guy and can magically tell when they're going to call ..

And to answer your question, yes, my wife talked to them earlier last week and asked them to call on the weekend before 6pm. Unfortunately, the caller ID didn't show who they were so I didn't bother to awnser it.. if you don't want to tell me who the hell you are, then I'm not going to answer.. the knocking on the door analogy works well here too. Don't knock on my door and expect me to open up if you don't tell me who you are.. common sense there..so naturally that added to my frustration..

multiple calls.. no caller id display.. no message.. calling after 8pm.. I still don't get that last part.. who calls people after 8pm to sell them shit.. c'mon.

"Good, so this is how this is going to work. I will never EVER give you a credit card number over the phone so you print out the papers that are needed for the warranty renewal and mail them to me and I'll send it in.. got that?"

Well, It seems you somehow knew he wanted you to fill out papers for this warranty renewal. So, judging by that, you must have requested them.
    *Thumbs up!*

Ok. You got two phones. Thats GREAT. You don't want anyone calling you after 7? Turn off the ringers. BUT WAIT..."THIS IS MY TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO ACCOMODATE ANYONE BY MODIFYING MY WAY OF LIFE."

If its family time, and you don't want to have the phone ring, how hard is it to shut the ringer off? My sister has a 3 month old son. At 6 PM, they shut the ringers off on all three of their phones. I don't see how shutting the ringer off on the phone is "MODIFYING YOUR WAY OF LIFE" to any great extent.

This is the kind of stuff we talk about over here:
    http://www.livejournal.com/community/customers_suck/

    ;)

Oh, and if I was that guy, I wouldn't be in any great hurry to get those warranty renewal forms in the mail.. ;)

  13. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

hmm.. if I wanted to shut the ringer off I would.. are you gettig my point or do I have to drill. If, for some reason, an emergency call comes in..I'd like to assure that I can hear the phone ring.. When I'm upstairs I can't hear the downstairs ring and vice versa, unless I'm standing on the landing.. which I'm not apt to do for hours on end waiting for the phone to ring ;)

Your sister shuts her phone off.. I'm happy for her, really I am.. apparently she may never need to be alerted to any emergencies that may arise and thus doesn't need any ringers on.. or maybe she has esp too..

read my second post about knowing why they were calling.. that should answer your question..

Gotta say I agree with you 100% on this one Kodo, it's not rude or insensitive. I am going through that in a different way now, 2 teens in the house with phone rules and friends who will call at 10pm. If my phone rings that late there had better be some serious emergency or they are gonna become one. Still have answer machine only at dinner, won't turn off ringers (common sense). Nothing like trying to get a little one back to sleep after you get them down, I hated that.

Look, let's get this straight. These people who are "just doing their job", usually involves, in the case of Telemarketers pestering the pi$$ out everybody they can - in flagrant disregard to any inconvenience/annoyance or anything else to ANYBODY. It's a numbers game to them, and they nearly always don't give a hoot about anyone else, as long as they make their sale.

    My P.O.V. is this:-

I usually say to the unwanted caller that chooses to ignore the automatic recording of "authorized or invited calls only" by saying:-
"Hang on, I can't talk to you right now. How about you give me YOUR home phone number and I ring you back sometime in the middle of the night when it suits me? They always say "No, I my home number is confidential!" Then I say, "Oh, I see you probably don't want anyone intruding in your private life, right?" They then say "Well, yeah". That's when I say "Well now you know how I feel" <click> End of story!

Listen, I pay the phone bill, as I do the Mortgage for house door they may want knock on and ignore the sign.

So if I aint nice to the ignorant sales person that cares only about how much he/she can rip me off for, then tuff!

You thought I was a really nice guy? Well I aint!

Don't like your phone ringing after 8? Shut it off. Going to complain because you get calls after 8, but you can't shut off the phone because it might be an emergency? Looks like your going to have to get pissed off and post about it online all the time then. I look forward to future adventures in "Kodo's Phone Problems, Volume 2"

A sears guy called your phone, doing a job you requested of him, and you give him attitude. Nice going. Most likely, he missed the meeting on "DON'T CALL KODO AFTER 7," and it was an honest mistake. Like I said, if I was that guy, and I got treated like that...I'd make sure those forms took QUITE a while. Probably about a week after you needed to have them. ;)

No argument there. I happen to own my own businesses, part of which is sales. But the thing is, I do business by pleasing my customers, not pissing them off in the middle of the night.

If you like talking to people at all hours whose sole mission is to get a slice of your wallet, wether you actually want it or not, then fine, I have better things to do.

If people don't give a toss when they see a sign or hear a message clearly stating they're not wanted unless invited, or to come back at such and such a time, then I have little sympathy, I'm afraid. I do I offend them? I hope so. In fact, I hope they're so offended they never bother me again.

And yeah, if I went around ringing up strangers and knocking on doors, after I'd been told not to, especially late at night, and not identifying myself, I would not be surprised if I was told to leave in not to friendly terms.

There is a right and a wrong way to do business. Nearly 20 years in business has at least taught me that.

  22. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

It's apparent that you like to cater to people who call you. You also fail to see the overwhelming relationship to knocking on my front door and having my privacy. I choose not to turn the ringer off for obvious reasons already stated. I should not have to, at any time, make any changes to the way I do things in my house, my own PRIVATE house, for any individual at any time for any reason. There is no courtesy. Why would any one assume that 8:20 pm is a proper time to call someone unless specifically given permission to do so.. this moves into your second comment..

No, as I stated earlier, my wife asked him to call on the weekend before 6pm.. That he did.. several times. I had no idea who it was on the other end when he called because I can't read minds and I'm certainly not electronically jacked into the teclo system to be able to perform such a task. I wasn't informed until last night at 8:00 pm when he called the first time and my wife asked who it was and I told her" I don't know, some 800 number" and she said oh, that might be sears calling. Still no definate on who it was since the caller ID didn't show anything but the number. That's just not enough information for me to determine who it is. So, he was present at the meeting with my wife when she said : keywords weekend and before 6pm. I'm afraid the time line is a little messed up here and that is why you're not getting it.. but I don't have the time right now to post it.. maybe later I will.

So he was lucky that I even asked to have him send them... I could care less if I have them or not. They could get lost in the bermuda triangle for I care.. They called last year and gave us a hard time about sending a paper form. They insisted that we give them our CC over the phone. I are not that stoopid. So my second agenda once I heard "sears" come out of his mouth was to make sure I got what I wanted this time around if anything. I was inconvenienced by them and it was necessary to make myself abundantly clear. I believe my point sunk in.

So I still don't get how you think it's NOT innapropriate to call after 8pm. I don't know about you, but there is a fairly large number of people that actually go to sleep around that time. If I were one of those people, I would be doubly pissed that I was called and woken up.

Ringers are there for a reason. I like to be prepaired should someone call me for emergency reasons. It's happened before, and I'm sure it will happen again sometime. I could only imagine the frustration a member of my family would go through should they have to contact me and could not because I turned my ringers off. And to clarify further, my family is not on the same list as a solicitor, but I have asked even THEM to not call my home phone after 7pm, rather to call my cell phone unless it's an emergency.

The owness is on them (sears in this case) to make sure they do not inconvenience me (the customer) in any way shape or form. Not the other way around. They are the business, I am the individual. They are the ones making the advance and must abide by my rules at all times. I wouldn't come into your home and eat out of your fridge and I expect that you would not like that much either.

and please note that I didn't curse at him once... and for those that do know me, that takes alot of effort. I have a sailors mouth..

Hmmm.... Im thinking normal business hours are 9pm - 5pm whatever time zone you are located in. Seems to me that 8pm is pushing it a wee bit. If your business can only sell crap over the phone past 8pm, I'm thinking you will be going under soon and should be looking for a new job.

Why should Kodo have to shut his phone off? what if a relative calls for an emergency or something? he shouldnt have to worry about salesmen calling an hour before it gets dark. I cant even believe someone would defend a salemen calling a house at 8 PM.

if anyone besides my family calls at 8:00pm, they will get a similiar conversation kodo had with the sears guy. if you want to do business with me, do it during business hours. i'm home all day, you will be able to reach me. oh yeah...business hours are 8-5. don't want to call during that time? tough. deal with me, or don't call.

Telemarketers are the bastard sons of Satan, Azazel, The Dark Lord Baphomet. For God knows how long, they have called my house daily, up to three times a day and it's always the same. They wait for the six rings, they wait for the entire answering machine message they even wait for the recording to start and five seconds in, the hang up. My family came back from a week long trip to North Carolina and there were 18 messages on the phone. Eight-friggin-teen. Three of these were from relatives or friends. The rest were the same thing *silence* *click* *silence* *click* *silence* *click*

And you know what happens when I do answer it? It's an Indian guy for At&t trying to sell me something "free".

And if the call is specifically for me, it's some college-aged chick trying to sell me a special "For college students only" credit card. Usually, telling these people that I have no job, no car and no license, shuts them up quite nicely.

But the indian guy is relentless.

Reguardless, I say we slaughter these bastards. Let God sort 'em out.

we have similar in the UK... after a few months 99% of calls are stopped, apart from the ones that go through a phone book calling numbers.... we have 2 lines in the house one is X Directory and the other with voice mail can be turned off.... BUT why should we turn it off or turn the ringer off.

the UK do not call works well and the telemarketing or company CS calls are rare BUT one thing I do notice they are NOT calling at 8:20pm, latest I have had a call is around 630-7pm... I mean if you accept calls after 8pm where do you draw the line? 10pm 11pm etc etc

"Hi, this is G.T. If you are a friend or relative, press 1 now. If this is something that I will consider an emergency, press 1 now. If you are a company that I do business with, press 2 now to leave a message. If you are a company that I'm NOT doing business with, hang up now or expect to have your ears blown off. Have a nice day."

It's actually: "Don't assume anything because you'll make an ass out of you and me." That way you make a play on the entirety of the word. ass-u-me. Get it?
