Poorly Packaged Hdds - What To Do?

I recently received 2x new Seagate HDDs from Amazon.

The two hard drives were each individually packaged in small padded cardboard boxes (8"x5"x1 1/2") and these were in turn placed in a somewhat huge box measuring 16"x12"x4".

There was a little bit of bubble wrap in the larger box but nowhere near enough to stop the drives from moving / floating about inside this big box.

I am somewhat concerned about this since I am certain that they must have been knocked about during shipment.

The drives have not been taken out from their anti-static packaging.

I am minded to return them but before I do, I wanted to see whether I was being overly paranoid.

Many thanks for any info provided
    Cheers

I am constantly amazed at how poorly Amazon packages their products. I would not be surprised if when you opened the box, the bubble wrap was not even wrapped around the drives, and the drives were just sitting at the bottom of the Amazon box.

As to your drives, when no power is applied to them, they actually are pretty rugged. Was the Amazon box smashed?

It should be noted when no power is applied, the R/W arm inside the drive is positioned over the "landing zone". This location is designed specifically to prevent damage during rough handling. So I would suspect they are fine but if me, I would send Amazon a note to express your displeasure in how fragile devices were packaged for shipping.

One word of caution - should you decide to do a "user review" on Amazon, it would be unfair to downgrade your rating for the drives because Amazon packed them poorly. That is not the drive maker's, or the drive's fault.

You are absolutely right, the bubble wrap was not wrapped around the HDD boxes it was just, barely, covering them. The drives, in their individual boxes, were just floating about.

No the (large) Amazon box was intact. No damage at all to it.

I am still in 2 minds as to whether to risk it or not. Of course, like a lot of other users on this forum I have received hard drives impeccably packaged that fail in 6 months or less or worse still are DOA.

Thanks for the advise and that is a very reasonable thing to say.

    Cheers
