Pop Up Ads; I'm Not very PC Savvy

I am not very PC savvy although I was trained by IBM on main frames a long time ago. My PC has advertising pop ups. I have Windows XP. I have followed some directions I found here and in other places. I edited the register (I think those directions were from a Norton site) and probably erased something I will need some day, but I still get the pop ups. I have Norton with automatic update and have been running Adaware and Spybot every day. I followed some directions from somewhere and started in safe mode and downloaded new Spybot and Adaware and ran them, but I still get pop ups. I downloaded something from this site and it keeps the pop up ad cookies cleaned out of my cookies file, but I still get pop ups. They seem to be from adserver, clickagents, ru4, banner something, and screen savers. Can anyone tell me what's wrong and step by step how to get rid of it?

Service Pack 2 has a popup blocker built into Internet Explorer. Go to Windows Updates. Verify messenger service is disabled. Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Scroll to Messenger and select disabled.

If non of this helps, please run our tutorial:

I have service pack 2 installed with the pop up blocker. I checked to see if the messenger is disabled. It is disabled. Is that what I want?

    I will run the tutorial.

Okay, I worked all the way through the tutorial, installed (or re-installed) all of the suggested programs. I did not do the suggested optional step check the clean "Delete Index.dat" checkbox, but I did everything else. All of the cookies that I would like to keep are gone, but the pop ups are still there. Now what?

Then read the tutorial in this Sticky thread < Hijack This Tutorial And How To Post Your Log File >

and post a HijackThis log as a .txt file attachment. To do this save the log file as a .txt file rather than a .log file and select manage attachments in a new thread to upload it. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail, items in the tray, anything you can close... Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder or choose run from the download. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT
