I keep getting adverts popping up when I'm online, and sometimes new icons (usually of a pornographic nature) keep appearing on my desktop.

I've tried all your suggested solutions. I have Norton Personal Firewall 2004 and Norton AntiVirus 2004. I've updated these and run the antivirus software in safe mode. I already had Ad-Aware and Spybot before reading your suggestions. I updated these and ran them in safemode. I also downloaded and used all the other software you suggested such as CWShredder, McAFee Avert Stinger, etc., etc. And, as advised I did these with Suystem Restore switched off. Everything I run reports that my system is clean. But it obviously can't be.

    Btw I'm running Windows XP.

Any suggestions as to how I can troubleshoot this problem.

    Thanks

    Mark

Do you constantly have Messenger running in the background? That's a likely source. You may want to consider running HijackThis and posting your log in the appropriate spot in the spyware forum.

I have, I think, turned messenger off although its icon appears in the tray in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop whenever I open my email application (Outlook Express).

I will run HijackThis and post it on the forum.

    Pop-ups

    Hi

Getting annoying pop-ups and occasionally new icons appear on my desktop. Updated my anti-virus software (Norton AntiVirus 2004), SpyBot Search & Destroy, and Ad-Aware. I've run these in safe mode and they do not find any problems. I have the Google Toolbar which is supposed to prevent pop-ups and Norton Personal Firewall 2004 which is also supposed to prevent pop-ups. I also downloaded all the other software recommended on this forum such, ran them in safe mode and still can't identify the problem. I've just run a scan on HijackThis and my log is given below:

Edit by chaslang: Inline log changed to an attachment.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Mark

    Re: Pop-ups

Why did you start a new thread for your problem? You already had one. I'm merging you back.

Why did you post your HJT log inline. Did you read the sticky thread on HJT log posting?

I started a new thread because the reply to my original thread said to put my HijackThis log into the spyware thread.
