Need programs like Spybot to get those types of popups to go away. That is spyware lurking on your computer.

Are you using Windows XP? if so what service pack do you have? ( SP2 disables this service by default )

so if you are using XP then and they look like Windows Popup boxes then read below........

As you dont seem to be getting popups from IE, I would imagine they are Messinger Service popups and you will need to disable Messenger ( dont get confused with the Instant Messenger as they are two different things )

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > then look for the Messenger service and set its Startup Type to Disabled

.... if its not this we will need some more info and possibly a screen shot of the popup?

Shambler, There are different types of popups. Some are bright like they say "You Win!!!" or "Your IP address is public. Click here to protect your PC" some are tricky like the one Halo describes, which looks like a regular Microsoft program (in this case Windows Messenger).

So next time you get a popup (or two or three) jot down some things about it and post the info here. That will give more information to us as to how you can get them to stop popping up.

In the meanwhile, do as Halo suggests. click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > then look for the Messenger service and set its Startup Type to Disabled

Please answer the questions we ask as it will lead to a quicker resolution of your problem.

see my post above as you said you dont need IE running to get these popups... I think if you have XP ( win2k, NT ) its the Messenger Service thats giving you these popups.

I also have posted the fix in that post or run this app Shoot the Messenger http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3703 and disable messenger.

Don't get excited--I have no answer. I also have this problem. I have Win 2000 and they come up on my desktop hours after I'm off line. It's usually a membersteenzone.com (I don't go there!) pop-up that says "thank you for choosing to be on our website". When this comes up online, my NetZero session terminates...highly annoying! Y'all keep posting answers, I need help too! ;)

Same questions for you then Alabama.

    1) Does your computer run Windows Messenger? (read Halo's instructions below to find out)
    2) Do you run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy? If so, are they updated?
