Hi, I'm sure glad to have a place to ask questions and I've already learned alot from the stickys. Thank you for being there for people like me that are trying to learn and navigate on the internet. I'm not sure where to post my question. I've been told that I must scan my inbound local ports and send a copy to the security company in order to prove which ports are open so I can be compliant for processing Visa payments. I'm using satellite to connect to the internet. I have no idea how to do that. Is there a way for me to do that or do I need to contact a computer company to do this for me? Thanks, Mary.

    Re: Hi everyone

I'm not sure what you're talking about, however there's lots of sites that can scan your service/common ports. Here's a place: ShieldsUp

    Re: Hi everyone

Thank you jdsilver86 for your help. There is a new requirement to comply with controlling all inbound ports in order to process Visa payments over the internet. Satellite conections will never comply to the scanning of local ports that are open as the local information can not be gleaned remotely. I was told I could scan my computer (from my pc) for open inbound ports but I don't have a clue as to how to begin.

    Hi and Welcome

Moved your question to its own thread in the software forum as many of the folk that answer software questions dont vista the welcome center area.

However I would be asking you how you where told of the Visa company wanting a port scan of your PC, as this is the first I have ever hear of this and would be very very careful of who this info is sent to as port scans can highlight potential inroutes into your PC if your Firewall (be it a router with NAT/SPI or a Software firewall as in ZoneAlarm, PCTools, ones bundled with security internet apps from Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky etc) is not blocking ports of making then look stealth to the outside world.

Did you recieve this information from the Visa company in an email? if it was an email, then contact your Visa company via the official phone support as this doesnt sit well with me and I know of no banks/CC Companies that ask for this information, my banks are both UK baised and USA based ones (HSBC and Citi) and I have never been asked for this, all they mention is to make sure that you have adiquate security applications installed and keep them upto date, and if anyone asks for bank or card details saying they are from the bank to contact the banks helpline so they can put you through to the security/fraud section.

Please double and tripple check this is correct info before sending any port or security data about your PC to anyone, even visit your banks branch if the Visa card is from them to check this info.

Thanks for helping me find the right place for this question, Halo. Thank you again for the help jdsilver86. I operate a home-based business where I must process Visa Cards electronically and my bank is fearful of Visa account information theft and has required me to become compliant or they may pull my merchant account in the future plus I'm being charged a non-compliant fee each month that I am not compliant. When I called them today, I was told that if I could provide them with a copy of a local scan of my inbound ports and state that I was using satellite to connect to the internet they would put the information in my file stating that I was monitoring my own connections and keeping them secured myself. They would then declare me compliant. "Satellite connections will never comply to the scanning of local ports that are open as the local information can not be gleaned remotely. I was told I could scan my computer (from my pc) for open inbound ports but I don't have a clue as to how to begin (part of my previous post)." There was someone from a professional company here last week that used my C/A antivirus software to set up a firewall and set another buildout firewall on my NETGEAR as well. The security compliance company will not take my word for anything and requires that I send them proof. Is there a way I can scan my computer from my computer to determine which inbound ports are open?
